Australian government confirms Donald Trump asked PM Scott Morrison for help to discredit Robert Mueller investigation

Washington: President Donald Trump recently asked the Australian prime minister Scott Morrison and other foreign leaders to help Attorney General William Barr with an investigation into the origins of the Russia probe that shadowed his administration for more than two years, the Justice Department said Monday.

The revelation underscores the extent to which Trump remains consumed by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, and the ways in which he has used the apparatus of the United States government to investigate what he believes are its politically motivated origins. It also highlights Barr's hands-on role in leading that investigation, including travelling overseas for personal meetings with foreign law enforcement officials.

Trump's interactions with foreign leaders — and Barr's role in those discussions — are under heightened scrutiny now that the House has launched an impeachment inquiry into the president. The probe centres on Trump's summertime call with Ukraine's president, revealed by a whistleblower CIA intelligence officer, in which Trump presses for help investigating Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump has heaped praise on Barr since he took the helm of the Justice Department earlier this year, viewing him as a key ally for his political agenda, including his push to "investigate the investigators" in the Russia probe. But the Justice Department has denied Barr had any knowledge that Trump encouraged Ukraine to work with him on a separate investigation into Biden.

The president has sought, without evidence, to implicate the Bidens in the kind of corruption that has long plagued Ukraine. Hunter Biden served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company at the same time his father was leading the Obama administration's diplomatic dealings with Kyiv.

Though the timing raised concerns among anti-corruption advocates, there has been no evidence of wrongdoing by either the former vice president or his son. There is no evidence that Biden's son was ever under investigation in Ukraine.

The 25 July call by Trump to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy prodding him to dig up dirt on Biden was separate from the numerous conversations Trump had with foreign leaders as part of the investigation into the Russia probe.

Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Trump made those calls on Barr's behalf.

"At Attorney General Barr's request, the President has contacted other countries to ask them to introduce the Attorney General and Mr Durham to appropriate officials," Kupec said.

Trump was requesting help for US Attorney John Durham's investigation into the origins of special counsel Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The investigation outraged Trump, who cast it as a politically motivated "witch hunt."

Durham's investigation has been cheered by Trump allies, who believes the original FBI probe into Russia's election interference was driven by Democrats.

Barr travelled to Italy last week with Durham, where the two met with government officials as part of the investigation, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. As part of his investigation, Durham is examining what led the US to open a counterintelligence investigation on the Trump campaign and the roles various countries played in that probe. The attorney general's presence on the trip exemplifies how much of an active role the nation's chief law enforcement officer is taking in overseeing the investigation.

Mueller wrapped up his report earlier this year with an inconclusive finding of Trump — the president was not charged with any crimes, but Mueller pointedly said he did not exonerate Trump. The president promptly called for an investigation into the origins of the Mueller probe.

Justice officials said that has involved seeking help from numerous foreign countries, including Australia. The FBI's counterintelligence investigation that later became the Mueller probe was triggered, in part, from a tip from an Australian diplomat. George Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign adviser, had told the diplomat, Alexander Downer, in May 2016 that Russia had thousands of stolen emails that would be potentially damaging to Hillary Clinton.

Papadopoulos, who served as a foreign policy adviser to Trump's campaign, had learned from a Maltese professor that Russia had "dirt" on Clinton in the form of stolen emails. The FBI's investigation into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign later morphed into part of Mueller's probe.

One official said Trump told Prime Minister Scott Morrison that the attorney general would be contacting his Australian counterpart.

Morrison's office said in a statement, "The Australian government has always been ready to assist and cooperate with efforts that help shed further light on the matters under investigation."

"The P.M. confirmed this readiness once again in conversation with the President," the statement said, referring to Morrison.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about the 2016 conversation with the professor, Joseph Mifsud, and served a nearly two-week sentence in federal prison.

70th anniversary of People's Republic of China: Xi Jinping oversees massive military celebrations as Hong Kong protesters hit streets

Beijing: President Xi Jinping declared Tuesday that "no force" can shake the Chinese nation as he oversaw a massive military celebration of 70 years of Communist Party rule, shadowed by a day of protest in seething Hong Kong that threatened to steal the spotlight.

Standing on the Tiananmen Rostrum where Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949, Xi extolled the "Chinese dream" of national rejuvenation — his grand vision of restoring the country to perceived past glory.

"There is no force that can shake the foundation of this great nation," Xi said, wearing a "Mao suit" as he stood alongside party leaders in Tiananmen Square.

"No force that can stop the Chinese people and the Chinese nation forging ahead," the country's most powerful leader since Mao said before riding in an open-roof car to review troops.

Around 15,000 soldiers, tanks and high-tech weapons were ready to file past Tiananmen Square for an event celebrating China's journey from a country broken by war and poverty to being the world's second-largest economy.

A symbolic 70-gun salute was fired at the square and the red national flag was raised to begin festivities held under tight security, with road closures and even a ban on flying kites.

New weapons — including a hypersonic drone and an intercontinental ballistic missile whose range encompasses the United States — are expected to make their public debut among hundreds of pieces of military equipment and aircraft, according to Paris-based analysts.

But behind the festivities, a clutch of challenges tests Xi's ability to maintain economic and political stability.

"The party hopes that this occasion will add to its legitimacy and rally support at a time of internal and external challenges," Adam Ni, China researcher at Macquarie University in Sydney, told AFP.

US trade war negotiations have dragged on, and African swine fever has raced through the country's pig supply, sending pork prices soaring.

But the major headache is Hong Kong, where pro-democracy protesters hit the streets early in a bid to grab the spotlight from Beijing, with a series of rallies against what they see as the erosion of their special freedoms.

Hong Kong police said they were expecting violence across the city, warning it could be "very, very dangerous", while masked protesters said that "in the face of tyranny, we can only fight as if our last battle".

Officers fanned out across the territory and small pockets of demonstrators marched through the streets for what they dubbed a "Day of Grief", while local officials watched a flag-raising ceremony behind closed doors.

The semi-autonomous city has been embroiled for months in the worst unrest since Britain returned it to China in 1997, with police and hardcore protesters trading tear gas and petrol bombs.

Xi vowed Monday to continue to "fully and faithfully implement" the one country, two systems policy under which Hong Kongers enjoy freedoms unseen on the mainland.

'Protect its interests'
Access to the Beijing parade was restricted with police turning away crowds lining up with flags in the hope of seeing a glimpse of the military procession.

Movie theatres organised screenings of the celebrations.

The military show of force will be followed by a pageant involving 100,000 civilians and 70 floats depicting China's greatest achievements. Organisers will release 70,000 doves and 70,000 balloons before an evening performance and fireworks in Tiananmen.

"Beijing wants to highlight its military modernisation, political unity, and determination to protect its interests," Ni said.

Authorities usually close factories to ensure blue skies during major events, but unhealthy smog covered the Chinese capital on Tuesday.

Party adapts
The Communist Party has repeatedly defied the odds to remain in power for seven decades.

Under Mao, tens of millions of people died during the disastrous Great Leap Forward, and the country was plunged into violent chaos during the decade-long Cultural Revolution.

After Mao's death in 1976, the party launched the reform and opening-up policy under paramount leader Deng Xiaoping, starting decades of breakneck growth and development.

But the party retained a stranglehold on power, sending troops to end the biggest challenge to its rule in 1989 when pro-democracy protesters occupied Tiananmen Square.

Xi has made clear that he believes only the Communist Party can make the country realise its dream -- with him at the helm.

"The Communist Party will continue to ensure that it remains the sole political authority in China," said Drew Thompson, visiting senior research fellow at Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

"It will continue to adapt to do that and it will continue to seek to provide social goods and economic goods for its people, and as long as it continues to deliver those public goods, then it will likely stay in power, but the manner by which it does I think will change over time."

Democrats subpoena Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani for Ukraine documents; US president faces impeachment

Washington: At one end of Pennsylvania Avenue, the president raged about treason. At the other, the methodical march toward impeachment proceeded apace.

Democrats on Monday subpoenaed Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer who was at the heart of Trump’s efforts to get Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden’s family. That was after one of Trump’s staunchest defenders, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, said he would have “no choice” but to consider articles of impeachment if the House approved them.

With Congress out of session for observance of the Jewish holidays, Democrats moved aggressively against Giuliani, requesting by 15 October the “text messages, phone records and other communications” that they referred to as possible evidence. They also requested documents and depositions from three of his business associates.

Meanwhile, the circle of officials with knowledge of Trump’s phone call to Ukraine’s president widened with the revelation that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo listened in on the 25 July conversation.

File image of US president Donald Trump. AP

File image of US president Donald Trump. AP

Pompeo’s presence on the Ukraine call, confirmed by two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an internal matter, provided the first confirmation that a Cabinet official heard Trump press President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate Hunter Biden’s membership on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.

It is that call, and the circumstances surrounding it, that are fueling the new Democratic drive for impeachment.

McConnell, a steadfast Trump defender, nonetheless swatted down talk that the GOP-controlled Senate could dodge the matter of impeachment if the House approved charges against Trump.

“It’s a Senate rule related to impeachment, it would take 67 votes to change, so I would have no choice but to take it up,” McConnell said on CNBC. “How long you’re on it is a whole different matter.”

Trump took to Twitter to defend anew his phone call with Zelenskiy as “perfect” and to unleash a series of attacks, most strikingly against House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff. The Democrat, he suggested, ought to be tried for a capital offense for launching into a paraphrase of Trump during a congressional hearing last week.

“Rep. Adam Schiff illegally made up a FAKE & terrible statement, pretended it to be mine as the most important part of my call to the Ukrainian President, and read it aloud to Congress and the American people,” the president wrote. “It bore NO relationship to what I said on the call. Arrest for Treason?”

Trump tweeted repeatedly through the day but was, for the most part, a lonely voice as the White House lacked an organization or process to defend him. Senior staffers, including acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and White House counsel Pat Cipollone, were to present Trump this week with options on setting up the West Wing’s response to impeachment, officials said.

A formal war room was unlikely, though some sort of rapid response team was planned to supplement the efforts of Trump and Giuliani. But Trump was angry over the weekend at both Mulvaney and press secretary Stephanie Grisham for not being able to change the narrative dominating the story, according to two Republicans close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Democrats have orders from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to keep momentum going despite a two-week recess that started on Friday. Staff for three committees are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday to depose Marie “Masha” Yovanovitch, the US ambassador to Ukraine who was removed by the Trump administration earlier this year, and Kurt Volker, who resigned last week as America’s Ukrainian envoy. Members of the intelligence committee on Friday will interview Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the intelligence community who first received the whistleblower’s complaint.

Democrats are driving the proceedings toward what some hope is a vote to impeach, or indict, Trump by year’s end. They have launched a coordinated messaging and polling strategy aimed at keeping any political backlash in closely divided districts from toppling their House majority.

Meanwhile, an outside group that supports GOP House candidates was starting anti-impeachment digital ads on Monday against three House Democrats from districts Trump won in 2016. The ads by the Congressional Leadership Fund accuse Representatives Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania, Elaine Luria of Virginia and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan of “tearing us apart,” and are among the first in which Republicans are trying to use the impeachment issue against Democratic candidates.

However, support across America for impeachment has grown significantly from its level before the House launched its formal inquiry last week.

A new poll from Quinnipiac University shows 47% of registered voters say Trump should be impeached and removed from office, while 47% say he should not. Just a week before, it was 37% for impeachment and 57 percent against. That was before the White House released its rough version of the call between Trump and Ukraine’s president and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of a formal impeachment inquiry.

In the CNN poll, 47% said Trump should be impeached and removed from office, up from 41% in May.

Both polls showed dramatic partisan polarization remains on impeachment: most Democrats expressing support, the vast majority of Republicans opposed. The polls disagreed over whose opinions are changing — Quinnipiac showing increased impeachment support coming more from Democrats, CNN from Republicans.

Schiff said on Sunday that his intelligence panel would hear from the still-secret whistleblower “very soon” but that no date had been set and other details remained to be worked out.

A day after Trump demanded to meet the whistleblower, whom he has repeatedly assailed, he said when asked about the person, “Well, we’re trying to find out about a whistleblower,” who made his perfect call “sound terrible.”

The whistleblower’s attorney, Andrew Bakaj, said on Monday that the person “is entitled to anonymity. Law and policy support this, and the individual is not to be retaliated against. Doing so is a violation of federal law.”

Separately, the Justice Department disclosed that Trump recently asked Australian prime minister Scott Morrison and other foreign leaders to help Attorney General William Barr with an investigation of the origins of the Russia investigation that has shadowed his administration for more than two years.

Justice spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Trump made the calls at Barr’s request.

Trump was requesting help for US Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The investigation outraged Trump, who cast it as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

The Russia probe remains Trump’s motivating factor, according to Tom Bossert, the president’s former homeland security adviser.

“I honestly believe this president has not gotten his pound of flesh yet from past grievances on the 2016 investigation,” Bossert said Sunday on ABC. “If he continues to focus on that white whale, it’s going to bring him down.”

Google Doodle for 1 October, 2019 celebrates noted psychiatrist, Herbert Kleber.

In 1964, Kleber was assigned to a prison hospital in Lexington, Kentucky while volunteering for the United States Public Health Service. Several inmates were being treated for addiction at this facility, however upon discovering that a majority of patients would relapse shortly after release, Kleber started working on a new approach to address this issue.

While the commonly held notion of addiction viewed it as a moral failure, Kleber perceived it as a medical condition and rather than punishing or shaming his patients, he stressed on the importance of research to help keep them on the road to recovery and avoid relapses through careful use of medication and therapeutic communities.

Kleber co-founded the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University and was a leading figure in reframing the field of substance abuse research and treatment as a medical discipline. Kleber was also appointed as the  Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the Office of National Drug Control Policy by the then president George H.W. Bush. He founded the Drug Dependence Unit at Yale University and ran the organisation from 1968 to 1989.

The psychiatrist was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 19 June, 1934 and attended Dartmouth College. He would describe himself as a "perpetual optimist," allowing his patients to be diagnosed and treated, rather than being shamed for their afflictions.

China’s Communist leaders need to reinvent economic policy as party celebrates 70 years in power; trade war, slowing economy pose challenges

Beijing: President Xi Jinping has an ambitious goal for China: to achieve “national rejuvenation” as a strong and prosperous nation by 2049, which would be the 100th anniversary of Communist Party rule. One problem: Donald Trump wants to make the United States great again too.

The emerging clash between a rising power and the world’s dominant one is front and centre in a new set of challenges that the Chinese Communist Party faces as it celebrates 70 years in power on Tuesday.

The party is all but sure to rule longer than its Soviet Union counterpart, which governed for 74 years until its collapse in 1991 under the weight of economic stagnation. Conversely, China’s Communist Party engineered a remarkable policy shift that has lifted millions out of poverty and transformed the country into a global economic force, all while cracking down on dissent.

A Chinese paramilitary policeman is silhouetted by a display showing the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China in Beijing. AP

A Chinese paramilitary policeman is silhouetted by a display showing the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China in Beijing. AP

But this formula, which served the party well through years of double-digit growth, is in need of reinvention as the economy moderates, the population ages and Xi’s ambitions, both economic and military, collide with America’s interests. In retrospect, as challenging as they may have seemed at the time, the easy years are over.

“The last 30 years, they had a pretty good idea, as long as the party delivers strong economic growth — be pragmatic, maintain domestic stability, do not screw up, do not take big risks — they’ll be OK,” said Minxin Pei, an expert on Chinese politics at Claremont McKenna College in California. “Now today they don’t know.”

Through much of China’s high-growth era, the United States and other developed countries were willing to help with technology and investment. Many believed that as China grew more interdependent with the rest of the world, it would be drawn into the Western-dominated system that governs international relations. In line with that, China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, agreeing to abide by its rules in return for better access to overseas markets.

Even then, there were voices that warned against letting China in. Today, from the US to Australia and parts of Europe, those voices are coming to the fore.

The Trump administration, taking the view that China is a threat, has restricted the access of Chinese companies to American technology and hit its imports with tariffs, prompting Beijing to impose duties on American products in an escalating trade war that threatens the global economy.

Militarily, the two nations are playing cat and mouse in the South China Sea as China’s navy extends its reach into waters that have long been patrolled by the Americans.

China believes the US, India, and others are bent on containing its rise — or, in the mind of China’s leaders, its rightful return to its former position as a dominant Asian power until Western and later Japanese forces arrived in the 19th century and inflicted what China calls a century of humiliation.

“China will ... continue to solve problems through cooperation with the outside world, but China must get prepared to use the baton to uphold its legitimate rights and defend what it has achieved in the past 70 years,” said Li Qingsi, an international studies professor at Renmin University in Beijing.

On one level, China’s trajectory suggests that a collision with the US was inevitable. On another, Xi has made no secret of his ambitions to make China an economic and military power, upending the approach laid out by former leader Deng Xiaoping of keeping a low international profile. His government has said it will not be cowed by threats as it pushes back at US demands on trade and expands its presence in the South China Sea.

Pei traces the shift in approach to 2008, four years before Xi came to power, when China debuted on the global stage as host of the Beijing Olympics and emerged relatively unscathed from the global financial crisis. A resulting assertiveness has accelerated under Xi, and Pei believes it is China’s conduct that pushed US policymakers to take a harder line, not its growing economic and military strength alone.

The new assertiveness will be on full display Tuesday with tanks and missiles in a major military parade that is part of the 70th anniversary celebrations. It’s a message that plays well domestically, instilling national pride, but fuels overseas fears of China and its intentions.

“Xi has come in and said, ‘We’ve laid low long enough,’” said David Zweig, a longtime China researcher and an emeritus professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. “He feels that China is now strong enough to make up for those 100 years of humiliation, which he talks about all the time, and to be a great power.”

The party faces domestic challenges too. Even before the trade war, economic growth was bound to slow as the country reached middle-income levels. The one-child policy, which the party introduced around 1980 to control population growth, has left China with fewer workers to support an aging population. As incomes have risen, the public’s focus has shifted from purely economic improvement to quality of life issues, one reason Xi has made the environment a priority.

No one is predicting the demise of the Chinese Communist Party anytime soon. Zweig notes that not only did the Soviets fail to deliver economically, they also introduced political freedoms that gave people the ability to complain about it.

Chinese party leaders did the opposite, opening the economy while crushing student democracy protesters at Tiananmen Square in 1989. They have built a sophisticated surveillance and intelligence network that, if needed, gives them considerable control over society and the internet.

“They are a very powerful state,” Zweig said. “It will not be very easy for people to overthrow them. There’s going to have to be some unbelievable crisis before they can really go down.”

Sri Lanka's former Army chief Mahesh Senanayake announces candidacy for upcoming presidential race

Colombo: Sri Lanka's former Army Commander General Mahesh Senanayake on Sunday announced his candidacy for the presidential election to be held in November. Senanayake's presidential bid was announced at a rally held here by National People's Movement (NPM), a collective of civil organisations.

Addressing the rally, Senanayake, who retired as Army Commander in August, said that Sri Lanka needs an alternative force and he believes he is that alternative.

Senanayake said that politics has ruined the country so there needs to be an independent force to bring about change in the country. The former Army Commander said that his team does not include politicians but academics and other experts.

“I have no connections to politicians. My backers are the civil society its honourable men and women," said Senanayake, who was the commander of the Lanka Army between 2017 and August 2019.

A loyalist of the former presidential candidate and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Senanayake was forced to flee Sri Lanka for the fear of reprisals when Fonseka was defeated by Mahinda Rajapaksa in the 2010 presidential election.

In 2015, with the defeat of Rajapaksa by the incumbent Maithripala Sirisena, Senanayake was reinstated in military service and was appointed the chief of staff of the Army.

Senanayake has become the fourth candidate to face the November 16 presidential election. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka People's Party (SLPP), Sajith Premadasa from the ruling United National Party (UNP) and Anura Kumara Dissanayake from the new left front of the Marxist JVP are already in the fray.

It is still not clear if Sirisena would throw his hat in the ring as a candidate himself.

Addressing a gathering of his Freedom Party (SLFP) in Kurunegala, the northwestern town, Sirisena said his talks last night with the Rajapaksa brothers to contest the election under a common symbol had failed.

“I told them that we cant contest under the flower bud symbol of the SLPP, they did not agree to it," he said.

The SLFP general secretary, Dayasiri Jayasekera said that the SLFP had had overtures from Premadasa to come to an electoral arrangement with the UNP.

“I have informed the President (Sirisena) and we will make a decision soon on the UNP request”, Jayasekera said.

The SLFP of Sirisena and the UNP led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were in an uneasy coalition and the differences led to the sacking of Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister in October last year.

Imran Khan says those standing-by Kashmiris are doing 'jihad', claims Pakistan will support them 'even if world does not'

Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan on his return from the US on Sunday said that those standing by Kashmiris were doing "jihad" and Pakistan will support Kashmiris even if the world does not.

Prime Minister Khan, who focussed on the Kashmir issue in his maiden address to the UN General Assembly, told his party workers at the airport in Islamabad that "whether the world is with the Kashmiris or not, we are standing with them."

“It (standing by Kashmiris) is jihad. We are doing it because we want Allah to be happy with us,” he said.

“It is a struggle and do not lose heart when the time is not good. Do not be disappointed as the Kashmiris are looking towards you,” he said.

He said, "Kashmiris would win if the Pakistani people stood by their side".

Khan on Friday raised the Kashmir issue in his address to the UNGA and demanded that India must lift the "inhuman curfew" in Kashmir and release all "political prisoners".

In his speech that went on for about 50 minutes, far exceeding the 15-minute limit for UN speeches during the General Debate, Khan devoted half of his address to the Kashmir issue, warning that if there's a face-off between two nuclear-armed neighbours, the consequences would be far beyond their borders.

His war rhetoric was in sharp contrast to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's peace message from the same podium few minutes earlier in which he said India is a country, that has "given the world, not war, but Buddha's message of peace."

Pakistan has been trying to internationalise the Kashmir issue after India withdrew the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on 5 August, but New Delhi has asserted the abrogation of Article 370 was its "internal matter".

India's decision evoked strong reactions from Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian ambassador.

India ended Jammu and Kashmir's special status by abrogating Article 370 of its Constitution on 5 August.

‘I want to meet my accuser’: Donald Trump demands meeting with ‘fraudulent’ whistleblower, Republicans defend US president

Washington: US president Donald Trump said on Sunday that he wants and deserves to meet the anonymous whistleblower at the centre of the fast-moving scandal that has triggered an impeachment probe against him.

The whistleblower, who could testify soon before Congress, fears for their safety if their identity is revealed, according to a lawyers' letter released by CBS News.

Battling the deepest crisis of his presidency, Trump in a series of tweets railed against accusations that he should be impeached for urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden, his potential 2020 White House challenger.

"Like every American, I deserve to meet my accuser, especially when this accuser, the so-called 'Whistleblower,' represented a perfect conversation with a foreign leader in a totally inaccurate and fraudulent way," Trumped said.

Trump accused top Democratic lawmaker Adam Schiff of lying to Congress last week about what Trump said to Zelensky in the July phone call. "He wrote down and read terrible things, then said it was from the mouth of the President of the United States. I want Schiff questioned at the highest level for Fraud & Treason," he wrote.

Trump's Republican aides have sought to turn the tables on Democrats pushing for his impeachment, insisting that the president was the true "whistleblower" as he had asked Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son for corruption. "This individual is a saboteur trying to undermine a democratically elected government," Trump advisor Stephen Miller insisted on Fox News Sunday.

"Getting to the bottom of a corruption scandal in Ukraine is in the American national interest." Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani — who has emerged as his point man in the Ukraine scandal — led the charge along with Miller in combative Sunday talk show appearances.

Brandishing what he said were affidavits incriminating Biden's son Hunter over his work at a Ukrainian company, Giuliani said Trump was duty-bound to raise the issue with Kiev.

"If he hadn't asked them to investigate Biden, he would have violated the constitution," Giuliani told ABC's "This Week," charging that "Donald Trump was framed by the Democrats."

'Honour your oath'

The Democratic-led House of Representatives launched an official impeachment inquiry last week accusing Trump of a "mafia-like shakedown" of Zelensky aimed at damaging Biden.

Trump and his allies claim Biden, as Barack Obama's vice president, pressured Kiev to fire the country's top prosecutor to protect his son Hunter, who sat on the board of a gas company, Burisma Holdings, accused of corrupt practices.

Those allegations have largely been debunked and there has been no evidence of illegal conduct or wrongdoing in Ukraine by the Bidens. But a transcript of the July call shows Trump pushing for Kiev to revisit the matter, saying both Giuliani and US Attorney General Bill Barr would be in touch.

For Democrats, that amounted to a smoking gun, leading Speaker Nancy Pelosi to finally approve an impeachment process she opposed as a risky distraction from the 2020 battle. Pelosi on Sunday called for Trump to "Speak the truth. Honour your oath of office to the Constitution of the United States."

File photo of Donald Trump. AP

"Don't make this any worse than it already is," she said. Democrats have charged aggressively into the inquiry, ordering Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to turn over Ukraine-related documents and scheduling witness testimony.

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Schiff said he expected the whistleblower to testify "very soon" — with all precautions taken to protect their identity.

'In harm's way'?

CBS News released a letter from the whistleblower's lawyers to the acting director of national intelligence expressing concern that their "client will be put in harm's way."

"We expect this situation to worsen and become even more dangerous," the letter said, calling for "appropriate resources to ensure their safety." Democrats have said articles of impeachment — formal charges — against Trump could be completed in as little as a month and swiftly voted on in the House, where the party has a majority.

The Biden campaign sent a letter Sunday to US TV networks to demanding they stop booking Giuliani for interviews, accusing him of "knowingly and willingly" lying. Polls suggest public support is growing for the impeachment inquiry, with a new CBS survey showing 55 percent of Americans, and nine in 10 Democrats, approve.

But even if impeachment is approved in the House, Trump would be tried in the Senate — where, for the moment, he appears able to count on a Republican majority to prevent conviction.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman denies ordering Jamal Khashoggi's murder, says slaying was 'a mistake'

New York: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a television interview that he takes "full responsibility" for the grisly murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but denied allegations that he ordered it.

"This was a heinous crime," Prince Mohammed, 34, told "60 Minutes" in an interview that aired Sunday. "But I take full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia, especially since it was committed by individuals working for the Saudi government."

Asked if he ordered the murder of Khashoggi, who had criticized him in columns for The Washington Post, Prince Mohammed replied: "Absolutely not."

The slaying was "a mistake," he said.

Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey on 2 October 2018, to collect a document that he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee. Agents of the Saudi government killed Khashoggi inside the consulate and apparently dismembered his body, which has never been found. Saudi Arabia has charged 11 people in the slaying and put them on trial, which has been held in secret. As of yet, no one has been convicted.

A UN report asserted that Saudi Arabia bore responsibility for the killing and said Prince Mohammed's possible role in it should be investigated. In Washington, Congress has said it believes Prince Mohammed is "responsible for the murder." Saudi Arabia has long insisted the crown prince had no involvement in an operation that included agents who reported directly to him.

"Some think that I should know what three million people working for the Saudi government do daily," the powerful heir told "60 Minutes." ''It's impossible that the three million would send their daily reports to the leader or the second-highest person in the Saudi government."

In an interview Thursday in New York, Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, told The Associated Press that responsibility for Khashoggi's slaying "was not limited to the perpetrators" and said she wanted Prince Mohammed to tell her: "Why was Jamal killed? Where is his body? What was the motive for this murder?"

Prince Mohammed also addressed the 14 September missile and drone attack on Saudi oil facilities. While Yemen's Iranian-allied Houthi rebels claimed the assault, Saudi Arabia has said it was "unquestionably sponsored by Iran."

"There is no strategic goal," Prince Mohammed said of the attack. "Only a fool would attack 5 percent of global supplies. The only strategic goal is to prove that they are stupid and that is what they did."

He urged "strong and firm action to deter Iran."

Thirty-six dead in China's Jiangsu after bus with flat tyre crashes into oncoming traffic, expressway opened after 8 hours of rescue ops

Beijing: At least 36 people died and 36 others were injured in east China when a packed coach with a flat tyre collided with a truck, authorities said Sunday.

The bus was carrying 69 people — its maximum capacity — when it crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the freight truck on an expressway in eastern Jiangsu province on Saturday morning, the Yixing public security bureau said.

A preliminary investigation determined that the accident was caused by a flat tyre on the left front wheel of the bus, the bureau said in a statement.

Nine people were seriously injured, 26 were slightly hurt and one was discharged from hospital. The Changchun-Shenzhen expressway reopened after eight hours of rescue work.

Deadly road accidents are common in China, where traffic regulations are often flouted or go unenforced. According to authorities, 58,000 people were killed in accidents across the country in 2015 alone, the last available figures.

Violations of traffic laws were blamed for nearly 90 percent of accidents that caused deaths or injuries that year.

Impeachment inquiry over Ukraine transcript has caught Donald Trump, top advisors off-guard first time in 3 years, reports AP

Washington: From the moment Donald Trump became a national political figure, he has been shadowed by investigations and controversy.

They have been layered, lengthy and often inconclusive, leaving many Americans scandal-weary and numb to his behaviour. And with each charge against him, Trump has perfected the art of deflection, seemingly gaining strength by bullying and belittling those who have dared to take him on.

Now Trump is facing a high-velocity threat like none he’s confronted before.

It has rapidly evolved from a process fight over a whistleblower complaint to an impeachment inquiry within two weeks. Much of the evidence is already in public view. A rough transcript of a phone call in which Trump asks Ukraine’s president to help investigate Democratic rival, Joe Biden. The whistleblower’s detailed letter alleging the White House tried to cover up the call, and possibly others.

Unlike special counsel Robert Mueller’s two-year investigation, which circled an array of people in Trump’s orbit but not always the president himself, Trump doesn’t have the benefit of distance. His words and his actions are at the centre of this investigation.

“The Mueller report, it was always Manafort this and his son that. There was a cascade of players,” said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley, referring to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Donald Trump Jr. “This was just Donald Trump and a disturbing conversation with another world leader.”

So, suddenly, Washington is different and the history of Trump’s presidency has changed. By year’s end, he could become only the third American president impeached by the House of Representatives.

Activists rally for the impeachment of US president Donald Trump, at the Capitol in Washington. AP

Activists rally for the impeachment of US president Donald Trump, at the Capitol in Washington. AP

That new reality caught Trump and his advisers off guard, according to people close to the president. If anything, they thought the spectre of impeachment had been lifted after the Mueller investigation ended without a clear determination that Trump had committed a crime.

The contours of that investigation played to Trump’s strengths. Mueller spent two years in silence, allowing the president to fill the vacuum with assertions that the investigation was a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.” The details of the investigation that did leak out were often complicated and focused on people in Trump’s sphere. Even Mueller’s pointed statement that he had not exonerated Trump did not seem to stick. There was ultimately plenty of smoke, but no smoking gun.

Numerous other Democratic inquiries appeared likely to meet a similar fate, including House investigation into Trump’s business dealings, his tax returns and a variety of administration scandals. For many Americans, they were one big blur of investigations without any clarity of purpose.

Then the whistleblower gave the Democrats what they needed: a simple, easily explainable charge — that the president sought a foreign government’s help for personal political gain — and his words to back it up.

For House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, and several Democratic moderates who had resisted calls for impeachment, the calculus shifted . It was now more of a risk to recoil from impeachment than charge ahead.

File photo of Donald Trump. AP

File photo of Donald Trump. AP

“What we’re seeing right now is a completely different moment in the history of this country,” said Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla.

One thing that didn’t change — at least not immediately — was the clear partisan divide over Trump’s actions, both in Washington and across the country.

According to a one-day NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll conducted Wednesday, 49 percent of Americans approve of the House formally starting an impeachment inquiry into Trump. Among Democrats, 88 percent approve of the investigation, while 93 percent of Republicans disapprove.

Mike Staffieri, a retiree and Republican who lives just outside of Richmond, Virginia, said Democrats were trying to “throw enough poop at the wall and hope something sticks.”

On Capitol Hill, some Trump allies concurred, confidently dismissing the impeachment inquiry as just another partisan effort to take down a president who is despised by many Democrats.

That rough transcript of a phone call in which Trump presses Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to work with Attorney General William Barr and personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani on an investigation into Biden? It’s just Trump being Trump, according to his backers.

“You’ve heard President Trump talk. That’s President Trump,” said Sen Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin.

Mark Updegrove, a presidential historian and president of the LBJ Foundation in Austin, Texas, said it’s that enduring support from Republican lawmakers that currently separates Trump from Richard Nixon, who resigned in the midst of the Watergate impeachment inquiry because his party began to abandon him.

“The big difference between this and Watergate is that you had both Republicans and Democrats being deeply concerned about the president being involved in criminal wrongdoing,” Updegrove said. “It was a bipartisan effort and you certainly don’t have that here.”

But it is early, compared with Watergate. There were small signs that some Republicans were trying to keep some measure of distance from the president. Some GOP lawmakers fled Washington for a fall break claiming they hadn’t yet read the whistleblower’s complaint. Others said they were open to learning more about the situation.

Trump’s hold on the Republican Party makes it nearly impossible to foresee a scenario in which the GOP-controlled Senate convicts Trump if he were impeached by the Democratic-run House.

The president is acutely well aware that it’s his party alone that can protect him. In the midst of the past week’s firestorm, he tweeted to Republicans: “Stick together, play their game and fight hard Republicans.”

He later deleted the tweet.

Boris Johnson rallies party for Brexit: Despite defeat in SC, UK PM vows to take Britain out of EU 'with or without a deal' by 31 Oct

Manchester: Embattled British prime minister Boris Johnson gathers his Conservative party on Sunday for what could be its final conference before an election, with the gathering set to be dominated by Brexit.

File image of Boris Johnson. Reuters

File image of Boris Johnson. Reuters

Despite a string of parliamentary setbacks and a defeat in the Supreme Court, Johnson insists he will take Britain out of the European Union, with or without a deal, on 31 October. His stance has put him at odds with the House of Commons, which has passed a law blocking a "no-deal" exit and lost him a number of his own MPs.

But it resonates with many pro-Brexit voters and particularly with Conservative party members who elected him in July, and are expected to give him a hero's welcome. The conference "will be a rally for Boris Johnson and a rally for Brexit", predicted Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London.

The four-day meeting in Manchester, northwest England, however, risks being disrupted by parliamentary business back in London. MPs were furious at Johnson's decision to suspend parliament for five weeks in early September, a move the Supreme Court quashed on Tuesday and refused to agree to the normal conference recess.

Opposition parties are threatening as yet unspecified manoeuvres that could force ministers to race back to parliament over the coming days. But in what will be seen as a snub to MPs, Johnson will deliver his closing speech as planned on Wednesday, when he should be answering questions in the Commons.

Johnson has had a turbulent two months in office, having suffered seven successive defeats in the Commons, in the process losing his majority. He expelled 21 Conservative MPs when they backed a law requiring him to delay Brexit if he cannot get a divorce deal with the EU by mid-October.

Johnson suspended parliament but the Supreme Court ruled this unlawful. And when he called for an election before Brexit day, MPs blocked him. In a further headache, a police watchdog is looking into whether he should face investigation over his links to a US businesswoman when he was London mayor.

But Johnson responded with defiance to the court ruling and has focused his ire on MPs, accusing them of "surrendering" to the EU and trying to undermine the 2016 referendum vote to leave.
His rhetoric drew accusations of stoking division, but it appears to be winning over pro-Brexit voters.

The Conservatives have had a clear lead over the main opposition Labour party since Johnson took over. A YouGov survey this week put them 11 points ahead, while an Opinium poll on Sunday put this lead at 12 points. "What he's trying to do is maximise support among Leave voters," Chris Curtis, a political research manager at YouGov, told AFP.

Poll numbers matter because, with parliament deadlocked, most commentators expect an election in the next few months. But Johnson must overcome a key hurdle before then. The law passed by MPs means he can only deliver Brexit on October 31 if he strikes a divorce agreement by an EU summit on 17 October. But few in Brussels are optimistic and the latest round of talks ended on Friday without a breakthrough.

Constantine Fraser, an analyst on European politics at investment service TS Lombard, said Johnson's team was running out of options. "They hung their credibility on a 31 October exit from the EU and it's very difficult to see how they can deliver that," he told AFP.

"So their response is going to be to come out fighting, to dial up the rhetoric and to dial up the confrontation." Not all Conservatives are enamored by Johnson's approach, but many moderates will avoid the conference. Former finance minister Philip Hammond who was expelled from the Conservative ranks over the Brexit law, warned his party had become one of "ideological puritanism that brooks no dissent".

Most MPs fear that leaving the EU with no deal would be economically disastrous, but the government insists it has stepped up preparations for such a scenario. Josh Hardie, deputy chief of the influential CBI lobby group, warned on Sunday that firms "cannot be protected against the worst effects."

At UNGA, a tale of two speeches: Narendra Modi spoke like a statesman, Imran Khan mired in a maze of contradictions

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Syed Akbaruddin was prophetic in his words when a few days ago in response to a query on Kashmir, he said India will “soar high”, Pakistan may “stoop low”. He is a seasoned diplomat, who has for long been a part of the Indian establishment and has been closely dealing with Pakistan at the United Nations on various issues.

Thus, he knew exactly how things may unfold at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan were to speak.

File image of Narendra Modi. ANI

File image of Narendra Modi. ANI

Modi’s speech — short, crisp and meaningful — was that of a statesman, a global leader with great appeal and vision, someone who inspired confidence and had the capability to ensure last-mile delivery. He did not take any names, either of any country or leader, least of all of Pakistan and Imran. It was not needed. He didn’t need to talk about Kashmir because it was an internal matter of India. His government had dealt with it with clarity and is dealing with its aftermath with a certain plan.

Whatever he chose to speak on the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, on Pakistan (albeit without naming it), he spoke at length at 'Howdy, Modi' event in Houston before 50,000 Indian-Americans and in the presence of US president Donald Trump and a host of American lawmakers. He conveyed his message loud and clear.

At UNGA, Modi was talking to the world about issues concerning India and the global community, particularly developing and under-developed countries. "India is the land which gave Buddha (messenger of peace), not yudh (war). That is the reason why, our voice against terrorism, to alert the world about this evil, rings with seriousness and the outrage. We believe, that this is one of the biggest challenges, not for any single country, but for the entire world and humanity. The lack of unanimity amongst us on the issue of terrorism dents those very principles which were basis for the creation of the UN. I firmly believe that it is absolutely imperative that the world unites against terrorism and that the world stands as one against terrorism," Modi had said in his address to the UNGA Friday.

Now, contrast that with what Imran said:  He spoke for 50 minutes, going over the stipulated 15 minutes, without caring about the constantly blinking red light that reminded him that he needed to wrap things up.

Imran, through that long speech at the dais, appeared tense, as if he knew he had failed in his endeavour to draw international support on Kashmir. He often contradicted himself but continued speaking as if he was making a last-ditch effort to tell his domestic audience that he tried hard, even as he impetuously told the world the worst kept secrets of Pakistan’s bankruptcy, about its army training Taliban in Afghanistan, how it fed on money from the West and offering a justification for radical Islamist terrorism.

It’s a commentary on him and advisors wisdom that about an hour after Modi eloquently spoke of “Buddha (peace) not yudh (war)”, Imran spoke of “picking up a gun” if he were in Kashmir.

Imran's speech, in which he attacked the prime minister of another country, does not behoove any Head of State.

Consider this: Imran named Modi 12 times in his speech and on another half a dozen occasions referred to him as “he”. He named India 19 times, RSS nine times, Kashmir 17 times, Pulwama three times (predicting more such terror attacks), picking up gun four times, onset of bloodbath in Kashmir four times, pushing for radicalisation in Kashmir six times. He was mostly wrong about RSS, including the uniform and the name of its founder, but to convince the audience that he was right he urged them at least twice to “google” it. BJP as an “ultra nationalist party” too found mention.

While one does not expect the prime minister of Pakistan to comport himself in such a manner at the biggest global forum. He should know that India under the Modi dispensation has the best of relations with almost all Islamic nations.

Modi as been honored with highest civilian award by several Islamic nation, including those by Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Afghanistan, UAE, Bahrain and some others. He received "The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance" by King of Bahrain and 'Order of Zayed', the UAE's highest civilian award in August end over a fortnight later, Parliament had defanged Article 370 and abolished Article 35A on Kashmir and bifurcated state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

As for Indian Muslims, Imran is grossly mistaken about their thoughts and beliefs. The biggest and most influential Muslim organisation, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, with a membership of over one crore, publicly supported the Modi government’s move on Kashmir.

India, using its “right to reply” to Imran’s speech at UNGA said, “Rarely has the General Assembly witnessed such misuse, rather abuse, of an opportunity to reflect. Words matter in diplomacy. Invocation of phrases such as `pogrom’, `bloodbath’, `racial superiority’, `pick up the gun’ and `fight to the end’ reflect a medieval mindset and not a 21st Century vision."

Afghanistan presidential election: Kabul under partial lockdown to prevent terrorists from tarnishing electoral process

Kabul: Afghans head to the polls amid tight security on Saturday to vote for their next president, following a bloody, two-month election campaign that has been marred by repeated attacks across Afghanistan.

The Taliban, who already have unleashed a string of bombings, have in recent days issued repeated warnings about attacking polling centres and have asked voters to stay away.

"Voting has begun all over the country, and we are glad the people are already in big lines at polling centres waiting to cast their votes," Independent Election Commission spokesman Zabi Sadaat told AFP.

Wary authorities have placed the Afghan capital Kabul under partial lockdown, banning trucks from entering the city in an effort to stop potential suicide bombers attacking the electoral process.

The capital's traffic, often gridlocked, has dropped to a trickle as schools and offices will remain shut for the day with many people choosing to stay off the roads.

Some 9.6 million Afghans are registered to vote, but many have lost hope in any leader being able to unify the fractious country after 18 years of war, improve basic living conditions and boost the stagnating economy or bolster security.

Several of the 18 original contenders have dropped out and the poll is considered a two-horse race between incumbent President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah, the country's chief executive.

Both claimed victory in the 2014 election – a vote so tainted by fraud and violence that it led to a constitutional crisis and forced then-US president Barack Obama to push for a compromise that saw Abdullah awarded the subordinate role.

Voting in Afghanistan's fourth presidential election begins at 7.00 am (02.30 GMT) at some 5,000 polling centres across the country. Authorities had initially planned to open hundreds more but, were unable to do so owing to the abysmal security situation.

One voter at a polling station in a Kabul high school said it was important to cast a ballot.

"I know there are security threats but bombs and attacks have become part of our everyday lives," 55-year-old Mohiuddin, who only gave one name, told AFP.

"I am not afraid, we have to vote if we want to bring changes to our lives."

Both claimed victory in the 2014 election – a vote so tainted by fraud and violence that it led to a constitutional crisis and forced then-US president Barack Obama to push for a compromise that saw Abdullah awarded the subordinate role.

Abysmal security

Campaigning was hampered by violence from the first day, when Ghani's running mate was targeted in a bomb-and-gun attack that left at least 20 dead.

Bloody attacks have continued to rock Afghanistan, including a Taliban bombing at a Ghani rally last week that killed at least 26 people in the central province of Parwan near Kabul.

The interior ministry says 72,000 forces will help to secure polling stations.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: "Any acts of violence against the electoral process, including attacks directed at polling centres, polling staff and voters, are unacceptable."

Election officials say this will be the cleanest election yet held, with equipment such as biometric fingerprint readers and better training for poll workers to ensure the vote is fair.

Still, the US embassy in Kabul has said it is "disturbed by so many complaints about security, lack of an equal playing field and fraud" and many Afghans say they have no intention of voting, citing fraud and security fears.

Saturday's poll was initially slated to take place in April, but was twice delayed because election workers were ill-prepared, and the US was leading a push to forge a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban.

That deal has been scuppered for now after US President Donald Trump pulled out.

Saudi Arabia to offer tourist visas for first time in bid to diversify economy, but ultra conservative kingdom would be hard sell to travellers

Saudi Arabia said Friday it will offer tourist visas for the first time, opening up the ultra-conservative kingdom to holidaymakers as part of a push to diversify its economy away from oil.

Kickstarting tourism is one of the centrepieces of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 reform programme to prepare the biggest Arab economy for a post-oil era.

The announcement comes just two weeks after devastating attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure — blamed by Washington on Iran — which roiled global energy markets.

"Opening Saudi Arabia to international tourists is a historic moment for our country," tourism chief Ahmed al-Khateeb said in a statement.

"Visitors will be surprised... by the treasures we have to share -- five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, vibrant local culture and breathtaking natural beauty." Saudi Arabia will open applications for online tourist visas to citizens of 49 countries on Saturday, Bloomberg News quoted Khateeb as saying.

Khateeb said the kingdom will also ease its strict dress code for foreign women, allowing them to go without the body-shrouding abaya robe that is still mandatory public wear for Saudi women.

The austere kingdom, which forbids alcohol and has a strict social code, is seen by many as a hard sell for tourists.

Prince Mohammed is seeking to change that through a sweeping liberalisation drive that has brought new cinemas, mixed-gender concerts and sporting extravaganzas to Saudi Arabia.

International criticism of the kingdom's human rights record, including the gruesome murder last year of critic Jamal Khashoggi and a crackdown on female activists, could further put off foreign visitors, observers say.

Fears of a regional conflict after the 14 September attacks on state oil giant Aramco may also dampen the kingdom's appeal to holidaymakers.

Visas are currently restricted to expat workers, their dependents and Muslim pilgrims travelling to holy sites in Mecca and Medina.

Saudi Arabia last year began issuing visas to visitors to attend sporting and cultural events in a bid to kickstart tourism.

The government, reeling from low oil prices, says it hopes tourism will contribute up to 10 percent of the gross domestic product by 2030, compared to three percent currently.

It says by 2030 it aims to attract up to 100 million annual visits by both domestic and foreign tourists.

The sector is expected to create up to one million tourism jobs, the government says, as the kingdom battles high youth unemployment.

Saudi Arabia has splurged billions in an attempt to build a tourism industry from scratch.

In 2017, the kingdom announced a multi-billion dollar project to turn 50 islands and other pristine sites on the Red Sea into luxury resorts.

The country is also developing historic sites such as the centuries-old Mada'in Saleh, home to sandstone tombs of the same civilisation which built the Jordanian city of Petra.

'Close to a spy': Donald Trump hits out at person who helped whistleblower, says individual could have committed treason

Washington: President Donald Trump lashed out Thursday at the person who gave information to a whistleblower who has accused the president of abusing the nation's highest office for political gain, saying that individual is "close to a spy" who could have committed treason — an act punishable by death.

Trump's comments led several Democratic House committee chairman to warn the president against "witness intimidation."

Dogged by the legacy-defining threat of impeachment, Trump was addressing American diplomats and their families, including children, at a private event for staff of the US mission to the United Nations in New York when he lashed out at those who helped his accuser.

Trump noted that the whistleblower had no first-hand knowledge of alleged abuse of office by the president.

"Who's the person that gave the whistleblower the information? Because that's close to spy," Trump said. "You know what we used to do in the old days, when we were smart, right? The spies and treason? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now."

The Los Angeles Times obtained and released a recording of the president's comments.

In a formal complaint filed with the intelligence community's inspector general, the whistleblower said "I was not a direct witness to most of the events described" but had received information over the past four months from multiple US government officials alleging that Trump "is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 US election."

The whistleblower found the accounts by colleagues to be credible because "in almost all cases, multiple officials recounted fact patterns that were consistent with one another."

The allegations stem from a July telephone conversation in which Trump urged Ukraine's new president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to help investigate Democratic political rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Trump maintains the conversation was "absolutely perfect" and says he did nothing wrong.

Meeting with Trump on Wednesday in New York, Zelenskiy said "nobody pushed me" during what he said was a "normal" conversation with Trump.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., yielded Tuesday to mounting pressure from her caucus and announced the launch of an impeachment inquiry against Trump. She cited alarm over reports that Trump had turned to a foreign country for political assistance, along with the administration's refusal to send the complaint to Congress, as expected by law.

The White House on Wednesday released a rough transcript of the Trump-Zelenskiy conversation, the same day the whistleblower's complaint was sent to Congress. The House Intelligence Committee released a redacted version of the complaint Thursday.

Trump's comments Thursday at the New York event led the Democratic chairmen of the House Foreign Affairs, Intelligence and Oversight committees to warn the president to temper his comments because they are seeking to hear from the whistleblower and other individuals referenced in the complaint.

"The president's comments today constitute reprehensible witness intimidation and an attempt to obstruct Congress' impeachment inquiry," Reps. Eliot Engel of New York, Adam Schiff of California and Elijah Cummings of Maryland said in a joint statement. "Threats of violence from the leader of our country have a chilling effect on the entire whistleblower process, with grave consequences for our democracy and national security."

According to a person familiar with the event, it was less of a typical "meet-and-greet" that presidents do when visiting American embassies abroad and had more of a campaign rally flavor with about 200 people, many of them political supporters of Trump.

The person said that while US Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft was there, few rank-and-file staffers from the US Mission to the United Nations attended.

This person and another familiar with the event said there was a band and a large number of Craft friends and family, including young children, who posed for selfies with Trump. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the private event.

Former State Department and other officials who have participated in events similar to Thursday's also condemned Trump's remarks. They urged lawmakers from both political parties to do the same.

"The president of the United States threatened potential charges of treason and execution to those who would dare report abuses of power," the statement said. "An American leader issuing such threats in front of public servants, not to mention their young children, is a dangerous and damaging development for our country. Such a statement is not only illegal, it is immoral."

The White House had no comment.
