Opinion | On ‘Hijab Day’, the only choice is to drop the cloth for ‘No Hijab Day’

February 1 is World Hijab Day. There is not much to celebrate about making millions of women and little girls roam lifelong inside tents, sometimes in 45-degrees heat, in the name of modesty.

But the day will not be observed solemnly. Across the world, Islamists will launch a blitz-marketing campaign upholding this atrocity as free choice, despite women across countries being subjected to lashes, public beating, acid attack, execution, and honour killing for not wearing it. More than physical intimidation is the ever-dangling threat of severe censorship, boycott, and chastisement in family and society.

And yet, it will be sold as choice not just by Islamists, by their biggest allies, the Left and self-proclaimed liberals, who would not want to stay even one day of their lives in a cloth prison but whose secular credentials are only validated by defending Islam’s ugliest practices.

On the same day, however, a growing number of Muslim women worldwide have started observing #NoHijabDay. They voice the struggle of millions who are subjected to the hijab and the burqa. Women like Taslima Nasreen, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Yasmine Mohammed, Masih Alinejad, Rana Ahmad, and Ensaf Haidar today openly champion the liberation of coming out of the hijab. Their numbers are growing faster than one can imagine, and silently.

In India, for instance, there has been much outrage about a school in Karnataka which has reportedly disallowed girls from coming to class in hijab. India’s liberals are seething, eager to keep up with the rage of Islamists. Hijab and burqa fail the most basic test of a liberal mind. But as long as you are deemed ‘secular’ for whitewashing the worst excesses of Islam by a small but powerful club of urban, English-speaking, privileged individuals, it is worth playing along.

The problem with this kind of perverted secularism is that more and more Muslim women are calling it out.

Even Muslim-majority nations like Kosovo, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Morocco and Lebanon have outlawed burqa and hijab by various degrees. Egypt and Syria have long banned the face veil for girls in universities. MP and journalist Farida el-Shoubashy is about to introduce a bill in Parliament to ban the niqab across Egypt.

In her 2021 Dawn piece ‘Burqa Isn’t Choice’, London-based Pakistani lawyer Ayesha Ijaz Khan writes: “When I am told that women choose to wear a hijab, niqab or burqa, I find the notion completely fanciful. Some may certainly be choosing it, but a large number are not. Particularly those who live in Muslim-majority countries, where free choice has never been part of our ethos.”

Some progressive Muslims argue that the Quran does not clearly stipulate the use of hijab or niqab.

But in an overwhelming majority of Islamic societies, rulers, scholars and moral guardians widely cite two verses from the Holy Book of the Muslims.

The first one is 24:31: “And tell the believing women that they should lower their glances, guard their private parts, and not display their charms beyond what {it is acceptable} to reveal; they should let their headscarves fall to cover their necklines and not reveal their charms except to their husband, father, husband’s father, son, husband’s son, brother, brother’s sons, sister’s sons, slaves, male attendants who have no sexual desire or children unaware of a woman’s nudity; they mustn’t stamp feet to draw attention to any hidden charm.”

The second one involves visiting Prophet Mohammed’s house with his wives around. A part of this verse, 33:53, says: “Believers, enter not the houses of the Prophet without his permission, nor wait for a meal... And if you were to ask the wives of the Prophet for something, ask from behind a curtain or veil. That is better for the purity of your hearts and theirs.”

When a tangible threat of shaming, social ostracisation, violence, and even murder hangs on one if she does not wear a piece of cloth, it is not choice. It is oppression.

The Islamic world faces a massive crisis of faith today. There is a silent crossover from Islam to deism and atheism in Turkey, Iran, parts of the Arab world and even Pakistan.

Movements like ‘ex-Muslims’ and ‘Awesome Without Allah’ start quietly in Islamic society, but individuals out themselves only in the safety of western societies or entrenched democracies. Others silently make the shift.

Some stay within Islam and try to fight Islamism from within, instead of leaving the faith and becoming persona non grata. They feel they should take on tyrannical practices instead of questioning the existence of God.

Other stay silent because declaring themselves atheist could invite social boycott, beating, firing, jail, and murder. Families feel atheists ruin their honour. Employers don’t trust them. Nations and communities call them traitors and security threats.

Liberals defending practices like hijab stifle the voice of those who suffer lifelong in silence. Which is why Pakistani blogger Eiynah famously responded to actor Ben Affleck’s spirited defence of Islam and calling Bill Maher a racist for asking uncomfortable questions about the faith.

“I saw your discussion with Bill Maher and Sam Harris, and I must say you did me a great disservice. Your heart was in the right place… What you really did though, perhaps inadvertently, was silence a conversation that never gets started,” she wrote. “Why are Muslims being ‘preserved’ in some time capsule of centuries gone by? Why is it okay that we continue to live in a world where our women are compared to candy waiting to be consumed? Why is it okay for women of the rest of the world to fight for freedom and equality while we are told to cover our shameful bodies? Noble liberals like yourself always stand up for the misrepresented Muslims and stand against the Islamophobes, which is great but who stands in my corner and for the others who feel oppressed by the religion? Every time we raise our voices, one of us is killed or threatened.”

Questions that no self-proclaimed, blindly Islam-defending liberal has been able to answer to this day.

Belgium passports to feature Tintin and Smurfs from 7 February

Belgium has launched its new passport with some unique changes. The European nation has tried to make the travel document stand out by incorporating comic book characters such as Tintin and the Smurfs in the passport design.

The new passport can be requested from 7 February, as per the Belgian government.

The new design pays homage to several iconic comic books such as The Adventures of Tintin, Willy and Wanda and The Smurfs. The unique design of the new document also makes it harder to duplicate, according to the Belgian government.

In a statement, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation asserted that the new passport was “even more secure thanks to new security and personalisation techniques.”

The Ministry also stated that the new design gave them an opportunity "to highlight the 9th art, the comic strip” which is central to the country’s culture and influence abroad.

As per the Belgian government, the price of the new passport will remain unchanged at 35 Euros for minors and 65 Euros for adults. The 34-page document has been developed in collaboration with anti-fraud specialists of the Federal Police. It is being manufactured by a consortium of companies including Thales and Zetes.

On a related note, the Belgian foreign ministry also added that a temporary exhibition on the history of the country’s passports will be open till 6 February at the Comics Museum in Brussels.

The announcement of the new Belgian passports was met with great joy and appreciation by comic book lovers worldwide. Some internet users joked that the  new passports have convinced them to apply for Belgian citizenship.

Others said that while Tintin and some other comic book characters may have been criticised for some of their “questionable attitudes”, the idea of having these fictional icons in the design of the passport was an appealing idea.

Several people also put forward suggestion s on how India can modify its own passport to incorporate some of its historical sites in the design.

Why streaming giant Spotify is facing the music over Joe Rogan, COVID-19 and Neil Young

Music streaming giant Spotify is in a spot of bother.

The company has lost anywhere between $2 and $4 billion in value, artists have been demanding that their music be pulled off the platform and users uninstalling with the app. The hashtag CancelSpotify has also gone viral.

Let's examine why the Swedish streaming giant is facing the music:

Spotify gets the full Joe Rogan Experience

In May 2020, Spotify inked a $100 million deal with arguably the biggest podcaster on the planet: Joe Rogan.

Now critics say Spotify is getting exactly what it paid for: The Joe Rogan Experience.

Rogan, who has become a lightning rod for giving platforms to far-right personalities, climate deniers and conspiracy theorists, recently interviewed Dr Robert Malone.

Malone, a virologist and immunologist,  has become a hero in the anti-vaccine community and been banned from Twitter for sharing misinformation.

Malone has questioned the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine and falsely suggested that millions of people have "been hypnotised into believing" that the vaccines work to prevent serious disease.

Rogan, who is not exactly known for challenging his guests on their views, later put out  a video on Instagram saying that he was only seeking to have conversations on his podcast with people who have “differing opinions.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Joe Rogan (@joerogan)

"If I pissed you off, I'm sorry," Rogan said. "I will do my best to try to balance out these more controversial viewpoints with other people's perspectives so we can maybe find a better point of view."

“I'm not trying to promote misinformation, I'm not trying to be controversial,” Rogan said. “I've never tried to do anything with this podcast other than to just talk to people.”

He also said that he schedules the guests on his podcast himself, and that he would try to book doctors with different opinions right after he talks to “the controversial ones.” Rogan noted that he earlier sat down on the show with Dr Sanjay Gupta, the chief medical correspondent for CNN, Dr Michael Osterholm, who is a member of President Joe Biden's COVID-19 advisory board, and Dr Peter Hotez from Baylor College of Medicine.

Artists voice concern

Following Rogan’s podcast, veteran rocker Neil Young demanded that they remove his music from Spotify to protest Rogan spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine.

The US rocker had written a letter to the streaming platform asking for his music to be pulled off because Spotify “is spreading false information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation”.

Young had reportedly said Spotify “can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”

Following his request, Spotify, in a statement on Wednesday, said that it regretted Young's decision, “but hope to welcome him back soon.”

However, Young wasn’t the only one who asked for his music to be pulled off the platform.

On Friday, Joni Mitchell sought to remove all of her music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young.

Mitchell, who like Young is a California-based songwriter, said, "Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

It is of signifance to note that Young and Mitchell are both polio survivors -- contracting it in the early 1950s before a vaccine became available.

Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan also waded into the controversy and expressed their concern to Spotify about COVID-19 misinformation on its platform.

A spokesperson for their Archewell foundation was quoted as telling Reuters, "Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harms of rampant mis- and disinformation every day. Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform.

"We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis. We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does."

Spotify takes action

Reacting to the negative press and the billions of lost valuation, the music streaming service on Sunday said that it will add content advisories before podcasts discussing the virus.

In a post Sunday, Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek laid out more transparent platform rules.

“Personally, there are plenty of individuals and views on Spotify that I disagree with strongly,” wrote Ek. “It is important to me that we don’t take on the position of being content censor while also making sure that there are rules in place and consequences for those who violate them.”

Ek said that the advisories will link to Spotify's fact-based COVID-19 hub in what he described as a “new effort to combat misinformation.”

It will roll out in the coming days, Ek added.

He did not specifically reference Rogan or Young.

Lithuania: Stepping on the tail of China over Taiwan and yet unperturbed

The main contention in Europe at present is between the Europeans and the US facing the Russian challenge over Ukraine. However, there is a sideshow going on between Lithuania and China over Taiwan.

In July 2021, Lithuania, a Baltic republic, announced the establishment of a Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius, its capital. On the face of it, this seemed a simple announcement. Taiwan has 27 offices in 23 European countries. Germany has four; France and Switzerland two each. All have regular diplomatic relations with China. The Vatican has an embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), since it does not have diplomatic relations with China.

Such offices are named after the Taiwanese capital, and are called the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office or the Taipei representative office. In Lithuania, the office is the Taiwanese representative office. This has evoked the ire of China, as if Lithuania has stepped on the tail of the Dragon which is now breathing fire.

European Union members have 17 offices in Taiwan, but each one is called either an institute, trade or a cultural Office. This nomenclature allows Taiwan to have economic and cultural relations without using the name Taiwan or Republic of China. Any deviation from this is considered a violation of the One-China policy, as Lithuania discovers.

When the Taiwan office opened in Lithuania in November 2021, it was the only such office in the EU, which used the name Taiwanese. It appears that Slovenia is also going to join this scuffle. Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša, in an interview with Doordarshan, referred to Taiwan as a “democratic country” with whom Slovenia would exchange offices as per the EU norm. Calling Taiwan a “country”, riled China again.

With Taiwan being the focus of Chinese aggressive intent and challenge emerging from the US and Japan, China is pricklier about nomenclature. What Lithuania has succeeded in doing is alter the delicate balance between EU members and China on the issue of Taiwan.

Currently Taiwan has formal diplomatic relations with 15 countries, which are mainly in the Pacific or in Latin America. From nearly 10 such relationships in Africa over a decade, they are down to one, with Eswatini.

China’s strong reaction created an issue while Europe is focused on Russia and Ukraine. Some would see Lithuania as a champion of democracy but the only difference is between the use of the term Taiwanese or Taipei.

Lithuania has not revoked its One-China policy. The Chinese foreign ministry believes that Lithuania undermined China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and created a bad precedent internationally by allowing use of the term Taiwan at the new office.

China downgraded its diplomatic representation and started imposing trade sanctions on Lithuania. China demurs that it has officially imposed sanctions. However, blocking of Lithuanian-related exports to China are seen at the customs. The larger issue is that German and other EU companies are told not to use Lithuanian components to stall the supply chain and hurt Lithuania. The EU which aims to support Lithuania against sanctions says it will complain to the WTO.

Lithuanian exports to China constitute merely 1 per cent of its total exports and if it was taking a brave position, then it could afford to do so at lower risk than major trading partners of China like Germany. Taiwan tries to compensate for the trade boycott; this includes an intent to invest $200 million, support credit lines of $1 billion and diversion of 20,000 bottles of Lithuanian rum which were destined for China, but likely to be blocked.

Lithuania is often the first to take bold steps. In 1990 it was the first to announce its independence from the USSR which led to several countries in Eastern Europe disengaging from the Soviet Union. In 2004, Lithuania joined the EU and NATO, along with Latvia, Estonia, the other Baltic Republics; however, Finland, the older independent republic has never been a part of NATO and has therefore shown a different policy in dealing with Russia.

Lithuania was a part of China’s ambitious 17+1 approach to Central and Eastern Europe. In 2012, this promised BRI funding for large-scale infrastructure development. The expectation was that the CEE region would have new infrastructure, renewal of old factories, investment in people and local projects that did not attract Western investors.

The Chinese attempted to cleave Europe through the 17+1 and included Greece as the 17th partner to show the investment in Piraeus port as a 17+1 project. However, no other major project succeeded and the finance expectant countries were disappointed. Lighthouse projects like the Budapest-Belgrade railway or the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant in Rumania were delayed.

At the last summit in February 2021, six of the 17 countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Slovenia) downgraded their participation though China presented Xi Jinping to raise the stature of the meeting.

Seeing the limited results, Lithuania withdrew from it, as did Slovenia. Not only did Lithuania leave in May 2021, the Lithuanian foreign minister asked other EU countries to also abandon the initiative. “From our perspective, it is high time for the EU to move from a dividing 16+1 format to a more uniting and therefore much more efficient 27+1,” FM Landsbergis said. “The EU is strongest when all 27 member states act together along with EU institutions.”

Lithuania’s intent is to enhance economic and technology relationships with Taiwan, which is an important supplier of semiconductors and has an efficient high-tech industry on which Lithuania would like to model itself. Slovakia and the Czech Republic are also looking at a higher profile of engaging Taiwan.

It seems from local discussion in Vilnius that Lithuania thought it was within the EU framework of engaging Taiwan. The use of the Taiwan name was suggested by Taipei. Was it a deliberate provocation to the Chinese Dragon? Or was there a local lack of clarity on the name in translation that led to this situation? If Lithuania is not spoiling for a fight, then it may just tell Taiwan to abide by the names EU members use.

Or is this the beginning of a tighter China policy by the EU?

The writer is a former Ambassador to Germany. Views expressed are personal.

Explained: Nor'easter that battered US East Coast with deep snow and powerful winds

A nor’easter with hurricane-force wind gusts battered much of the United States' East Coast over the weekend leaving people to shovel out heavy show — that made travel nearly impossible — and left a bitter cold in its wake.

One of the strongest winter storms in years, it triggered severe weather alerts, transport chaos and power outages across a region of some 70 million people.

Five states — New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Rhode Island and Virginia — declared an emergency, some areas of Massachusetts saw as much as 2.5 feet (75cm) of snow, with locals told to hunker down inside and nearly 6,000 US flights were cancelled across the weekend.

We try to understand what happened to cause such severe weather conditions and how the US is coping with it.

What’s a nor’easter?

The severe cold conditions were caused by a nor’easter — a storm along the East Coast of North America.

It is called so because the winds over the coastal area are typically from the northeast. These storms may occur at any time of year but are most frequent and most violent between September and April.

According to weather experts, Nor'easters begin to form within 160 kilometres of the coast that stretches between New Jersey and Georgia. This area is a perfect spot for the formation of storms. The polar jet stream blows cold air southward out of Canada and eastward toward the ocean.

The Atlantic Ocean is warm, thanks to the Gulf Stream — a warm ocean current.

Where the cold air and warm water meet, a low pressure system forms. The low pressure system causes clouds to form and a storm to develop.

Workers plow snow on 6th Avenue after a blizzard hit the Northeast in New York City. AFP

As per USA Today, the last notable nor'easter to hit the Northeast was in October. The storm hammered the area with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains, leaving more than 600,000 homes and businesses without power at one point.

As per experts, the storm will undergo bombogenesis, which means that colder air is expected to mix with warmer sea air. This will lead to a drop in atmospheric pressure, further leading to a bomb cyclone.

Storm pummels US

The storm dumped snow from Virginia to Maine, but Massachusetts bore the brunt of the fury, with neighbouring towns of Sharon and Stoughton getting more than 30 inches (76 centimetres) of snow.

According to an Associated Press report, more than 100,000 lost power at the height of the storm, mostly in Massachusetts. That had dropped to about 35,000 by Sunday afternoon, mostly on hard-hit Cape Cod. No other states reported widespread outages.

Authorities on Long Island reported three storm-related deaths. Suffolk County police said an elderly man fell into a swimming pool while shovelling snow in Southhold and was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts failed. Nassau County officials said two men aged 53 and 75 died in the town of Syosset while shovelling snow.

The National Weather Service said that Boston received record snowfall on Saturday, of 23.6 inches (60 centimetres). In 2003, Boston had the worst snowfall of 27.6 inches (70 centimetres).

Some school districts also announced that classes were cancelled on Monday to allow for snow removal, including Attleboro and Quincy schools in Massachusetts. Warwick, Rhode Island, schools also went remote on Monday to accommodate snow removal.

The storm also caused a massive disruption in air travel. Flight tracker FlightAware said that some 3,400 flights had been cancelled for Saturday traveling within, into or out of the United States. Another 1,411 were cancelled on Sunday, showed the website.

The LaGuardia Airport and the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York City and the Boston Logan International Airport each had more than 200 flight cancellations as of early on Sunday.

Understanding why Canada is witnessing massive protests and why #Karmastrikes went viral on Twitter

A prime minister in hiding and a country brought to a grinding halt owing to protests.

That’s what is happening in Canada where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to reports, and his family have been shifted to a secret location as the country witnesses unprecedented protests against COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Here’s a simple guide to what’s going on in Canada and why ‘Karma strikes’ has been trending on social media.

Truckers protest

Over the weekend, hundreds of truckers drove their giant rigs into the Canadian capital Ottawa to protest against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates required to cross the United States border.

The so-called “Freedom Convoy” — coming from east and west — started out as a rally against a vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers, but has turned into a demonstration against government overreach during the pandemic with a strong anti-vaccination streak.

On Saturday, the streets of Ottawa’s city centre were packed with trucks as the blaring, non-stop honking of dozens of air horns filled the air, an AFP news agency journalist reported.

Protesters participating in a cross-country truck convoy protesting measures taken by authorities to curb the spread of COVID-19 and vaccine mandates gather near Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Saturday. AP

“I want it all to stop, these measures are unjustified,” said one protester, 31-year-old businessman Philippe Castonguay, outside the parliament building.

Protesters compared vaccine mandates to fascism, one truck carried a Confederate flag and many carried expletive-laden signs targeting Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

The initial motivation for the protest was a new rule requiring truckers to show proof of vaccination when entering Canada, which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government implemented on 15 January. Until then, truckers had been allowed to cross the US-Canada border with few restrictions. The US imposed a similar mandate on 22 January.

But the protest has morphed into a catch-all movement of people angry at public health restrictions meant to control the spread of COVID-19.

Stephen Penderness, an unvaccinated 28-year-old trucker from Ontario, was quoted as telling AFP he was protesting for all Canadians, not just his fellow drivers.

"It's actually for every single person... everybody on the road," he said. "It's all about your free choice."

Angela Bernal, a 67-year-old retired teacher said she wanted "governments to lift the measures," adding that "maintaining the restrictions is useless."

“I’m locked into my own country right now,” Tom Pappin, an unvaccinated man who came from just outside Ottawa, was quoted as telling The Associated Press. “I can’t go on a holiday. I can’t go to a restaurant, I can’t go bowling. I can’t go to a movie. You know, these are things that it’s just gotten out of control.”

The 52-year-old said attendees are likely to stay parked by Parliament until vaccine mandates are lifted.

Police presence was heightened around the federal capital as there was fears of violence, but protests went off without any incident.

The zone around Parliament was closed for the weekend, and Ottawa police chief Peter Sloly described the situation on the ground as "unique, fluid, risky and significant."

Trudeau shifted

Fearing the situation, reports stated that Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and his family left their home in the country's capital and shifted to a secret location.

The CBC reported that Trudeau, his wife and their children were relocated from their Ottawa home to the undisclosed location in the capital amid heightened security concerns.

The prime minister’s itinerary for the day usually states he is in Ottawa if he’s at home, but on Saturday it was changed to say “National Capital Region.” Trudeau has been working remotely and isolating after one of his children tested positive for COVID last week.

The protests also prompted a top Parliament security official advising lawmakers to lock their doors amid reports their private homes may be targeted.

Trudeau earlier called the truckers headed for the city a "small fringe minority" who do not represent the majority of Canadians.

Trudeau said Friday that the truckers' views — which he described as anti-science, anti-government and anti-society — posed a risk not only to themselves but to other Canadians as well.

Support for protests

Conservative leader, Erin O’Toole, opposes vaccine mandates and expressed support for the protest.

“I support their right to be heard, and I call on Justin Trudeau to meet with these hard-working Canadians to hear their concerns,” O’Toole said after the meeting.

The movement also received an endorsement from former US president Donald Trump and some Fox News personalities.

“We want those great Canadian truckers to know that we are with them all the way,” Trump said at a rally in Conroe, Texas. “They are doing more to defend American freedom than our leaders by far.”

Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk also tweeted in support of the movement, writing, “Canadian truckers rule.”

‘#Karmastrikes’

Meanwhile, as the western country witnessed these protests, Twitter saw an interesting trend — ‘#Karmastrikes’.

Many Indian social media users used the opportunity to get back at Justin Trudeau and started tweeting #karmastrikes.

This was in response to Justin Trudeau’s support to the farmer protests in India that lasted for over a year.

In December 2020, Trudeau had come out in support of the farmers’ protests. India had then termed it “ill-informed” and “unwarranted”.

Congress MP Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi took to Twitter and asserted that before poking his nose into the internal matters of India, the Canadian PM should have remembered that 'karma' had the potential to 'hit back hard'.

Others too chimed in.

Another Twitter user wrote, “#JustinTrudeau supported Tractors protests in Delhi last year on Jan 26th, and now #JustinTrudeau & his family ran away to secret location due to security threat.”

Another Twitter user said: “Hello @JustinTrudeau, Thand toh nhi lag rahi??”

Several others too echoed the same sentiments, with some calling Justin Trudeau a ‘coward’.

These tweets were in response to Justin Trudeau's comments on the farmers' protest in 2020. He had stated that his government had raised the issue through 'multiple means' with Indian authorities.

Trudeau remarked that Canada supports the 'right to peaceful protests'.

The Ministry of External Affairs had sharply hit back at Canada's interference in the internal matters of India saying, "We've seen some ill-informed comments by Canadian leaders relating to farmers in India. These are unwarranted especially when pertaining to the internal affairs of a democratic country. It's also best that diplomatic conversations aren't misrepresented for political purposes."

World Leprosy Day 2022: All you need to know about theme, history and significance

Every year the last Sunday of January is dedicated to the celebration of World Leprosy Day all over the world. This year the event falls on  30 January  which is the last Sunday of January, 2022.

As the world gears up to commemorate the global initiative, let's find out more about the World Leprosy Day by taking a look at its theme, history and significance:

Theme:

'United for Dignity' is the chosen theme for World Leprosy Day 2022.
This theme stems from the drive to make everyone realise that people affected by leprosy are entitled to lead a dignified life free from disease-related stigma.

History:

The history of this global day dates back to 1954. It was French philanthropist and writer, Raoul Follereau who conceived of this global campaign to spread information and  generate awareness about leprosy amid people all across the world to alleviate the discrimination faced by those suffering from leprosy. The motive was to bring about a change in the mindset and attitude of people who inflict mental and physical trauma on leprosy patients.

As per India Today, India celebrate World Leprosy Day on 30 January on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Follereau, in fact chose 30 January to pay tribute to Gandhi's contribution towards society. Gandhi was highly compassionate towards people afflicted with leprosy.

Leprosy is a disease that is caused by bacillus Mycobacterium leprae. A Norwegian physician named Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen proved that the disease is caused by bacteria and is not hereditary. Hence, the disease was also named "Hansen's", to honor the physician's findings.

Significance:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), leprosy is an infectious skin and nerve disease and can also lead to depression. Moreover, people affected by the disease undergo immense mental trauma due to the attitude of others around them. They experience isolation, social stigma and marginalisation, which adds to their depression.

World Leprosy Day intends to eradicate this mindset and raise awareness and compassion among society about leprosy patients. The fact that leprosy is curable needs to be communicated to the public in order to advocate mental well-being of patients suffering from this illness. The significance of this day lies in the fact that no leprosy patient should experience social exclusion. They must not be ostracized from their community and face harsh battles all alone owing to the disease.

Go low, go slow: As schools start to reopen, how to rapid antigen test your kid for COVID-19

Melbourne: Many parents will be COVID testing their kids at home using rapid antigen tests (RATs), as school returns across many countries next week.

Several governments have strongly recommended testing of school students and staff.

This may be challenging for many parents, especially if their child has developmental or behavioural difficulties.
So, how can you safely perform a RAT on your child at home and help them to engage in the process?

Preparing for the test

As with vaccination, the key to performing the test successfully is preparing the child well and explaining what will happen, to give them some control over the situation and to minimise anxiety.

Sit down and talk with your child and explain:

  • They will need to do a RAT in the morning twice a week (if in Australia's Victoria or NSW). It won't be forever, but will be needed for the first four weeks of school, at least.
  • They can go to school if the test is negative.
  • And that all their friends will be doing it as well.

It doesn't need to be scary or painful. With the right technique, you'll be able to perform this test quickly and safely at home, or allow your child to do it themselves if they can.

In general, give yourself about 20 minutes, and remember not to rush the process the first few times you do it with your child.

It would help to show your child a video, like the one below, on how it's done as you familiarise yourself with the instructions.

There's no need to downplay the experience by saying it won't hurt.

Acknowledge it may be a little uncomfortable. Explain you'll do it together and they can show you how they would like it done for them. You may like to practice with a small cotton bud prior to using the actual RAT kit, either with them or another adult.

How to perform the test

First, lay the kit out on a table with the swab packet ready to be opened, the liquid solution tube and caps, and the test device.

For a nasal swab test, begin by blowing their nose and washing your hands. Then rest their head on a chair with a headrest, or on a pillow on the sofa where they can rest comfortably. In younger kids, you can have them sitting on your lap with their head resting on the fold of your elbow.

The swabbing hand holds the swab like a pencil, with the rest of your hand or little finger on their cheek, upper lip or chin, as if you're about to draw a moustache on their face. This will help stabilise the swab in case the child suddenly moves or sneezes.

They key is to aim the swab low (flat against the bottom of the nasal passage) in the nose and go in slow.

Many people have a crooked nasal septum, which is the wall dividing the left and right of the nose, meaning there may be more room on one side of the nose than the other. There's also much more room lower down the nose, and going too high and too fast will cause discomfort.

Think low and slow and aim down and back, rather than up high. This will reduce pain and allow more time for the swab stick to capture as much material as possible, thereby increasing the likelihood of a more accurate test.
Insert the swab about 12 cm into the nose and rotate it for 15 seconds, or about 45 times. Repeat on the other side. Never push against a hard resistance which may cause pain.

Then, dip the swab tip into the liquid solution, giving the tube a good squeeze and mix for about 15 seconds before closing the lid and then dropping the solution into the well on the test tray. Discard the swab stick carefully.

Wash your hands and wait. Most test kits require 15 minutes, but please follow the instructions for your particular brand.

Congratulate your child on doing a great job! We want this to be a positive experience for them as it'll be part of our routine for a while.

After having this done a couple of times, some kids may prefer to do this themselves. Giving them autonomy and the knowledge that it's not painful or scary will be empowering. Believe it or not, they may even start to think of it as quite fun if it doesn't hurt.

What about saliva tests?

Saliva liquid tests are different altogether.

They're not a throat swab. They may require a short period of fasting, depending on the kit, up to 30 minutes of no food or drink prior to the test.

The child will have to learn to do a few deep coughs into a closed mouth and then either express their saliva into a container or to have a lollipop device which they suck on.

The timing on reading the result is also dependent on the brand.

RATs aren't the only way to minimise transmission

No matter how well you do it, some children will find this harder than others. We understand that. But honest education and practice runs will help the vast majority of kids.

The key is planning, discussion, watching videos and attempting to make it a bit fun to try and take away some of their anxieties. Demonstrating the test on an adult may also help.

Of course, RAT testing isn't the only way to try and minimise COVID cases at school. There will be a range of other strategies that kids will be asked to do.

This includes vaccination, wearing masks inside and potentially some outdoor learning. Changes are being made to improve ventilation in schools by installing air-purifiers, especially in high-risk areas in schools such as sick-bays and canteens, and trying to install shade sails for outside learning.

There's a huge push to get as many kids as possible to receive one dose of vaccine before schools starts. Over 30 per cent of primary kids in Victoria have had one dose, with the aim to reach over 80 per cent by mid-February. There will also be pop-up clinics at some schools in the next few weeks.

The dose interval for children at higher risk of COVID (including those with some underlying medical conditions) has been shortened from eight to three weeks in the context of ongoing community transmission to ensure vulnerable kids are prioritised.

Booster doses for teachers are also critical.

There's much to do to support teachers, families and children, especially medically vulnerable kids, to make schools as safe as they can be. It's important to prioritise face-to-face learning to maximise the education, well-being, and mental health of our kids.

Maldives: Where is Abdulla Yameen’s ‘India Out’ campaign heading?

Recent reports of harassment of Indian teachers in Maldivian islands have suddenly made the 26,000-strong migrant community from the larger neighbour feel uncomfortable, if not feel unsafe as yet. The harassment comes in the wake of the Opposition PPM-PNC combine’s ‘India Out’ campaign, which has since taken the shape of wall graffiti in the islands and also capital Male.

Indian migrants are among the main life-line of the Maldivian labour economy, the nation’s mainstay tourism sector depending largely on migrant labour, now mainly from India and more so Bangladesh. Apart from working in the tourism sector in the white and blue-collar segments, and less in the grey collar segment, Indians also serve as teachers, doctors, nurses and store assistants apart from being housemaids and chauffeurs across the atolls and islands.

Teachers and medical personnel serve mostly in government institutions. Yet, they too used to face difficulties in getting back their passports from the authorities for them to rush back home for any family emergencies or for their own weddings. Given to wrong perceptions, Indian women staff have often found their houses burgled for gold that anyway was not there in most cases.

The less said about the labour class, say, in the construction and hospitality sector, the better. Because they land the pre-fixed jobs on a tourist visa and their employers hold back their passports illegally beyond the permitted period, many of them used to be tagged either as illegal migrants or charitably as victims of human trafficking. The results used to be the same.

Not the first time

This is not the first time that Indian migrant labourers in the archipelago-nation have been made to feel uncomfortable. They felt likewise for a few hours to a day or two at the height of the weeks-long combined Opposition protest that led to the exit of the nation’s first democracy president, Mohammed Nasheed, in February 2012. Then, unlike now, there were no concerted efforts of the ‘India Out’ campaign kind. It died a natural death even before it began. Not this time, it would seem.

Beginning as a peripheral, anonymous social media campaign a year ago, the anti-India rhetoric has captured the centre stage of Opposition politics in the country when former president Abdulla Yameen claimed ownership after being released by the Supreme Court in a money-laundering case.

Owing to the lower courts’ verdicts in the case, Yameen was undergoing prison sentence and was also facing disqualification from contesting the presidential polls, due in October-November 2023.

The Opposition has denied any role in the alleged harassment of Indian teachers. However, their leaders did come up with such fancy ideas as the direct ferry service connecting Kochi and Thoothkudy in south India to Maldivian destinations was being used to ‘smuggle in’ Indian soldiers.

While the government has not responded, public opinion is clear that India, given the size of its armed forces, does not require to ‘smuggle in’ troops if required. Many in capital Male had also seen huge transport aircraft of Indian Air Force (IAF) shipping in test-kits and other medical supplies first, and the Covid vaccines, later, not to forget essentials for distribution during Ramzan period.

However, the Opposition campaign, which Yameen deliberately took outside of the crowded, cosmopolitan capital of Male, to the islands, after coming out of prison has upset, if not unnerved, the Indian community all the same. In particular, they are unsure of the electoral intent of the political Opposition in the country as the Yameen camp has been constantly shifting gears, back and forth, between ‘India Out’ and ‘India Military Out’ slogans.

At the moment, Yameen seems to be settling for the wider ‘India Out’ campaign, his camp having launched red-coloured T-shirts carrying the legend in a huge typeface. Though the police had arrested four men wearing the T-shirt as it unfairly targeted a ‘friendly nation’, they slowed down the drive after Yameen continued to wear it on the streets, wherever he travelled in the country, as if not to create a major law and order problem.

This seems to have encouraged, if not emboldened the Yameen cadres, who seem to be coming out in relatively higher numbers than earlier. It is however unclear that all those that participate in the Opposition rallies in Male or elsewhere subscribe to Yameen’s views on the subject.

They may be against the government of President Ibrahim ‘Ibu’ Solih and the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for historic reasons. In island-level politics where the total population averages 2,000-5,000 people and where everyone knows everyone else, personal loyalty to local leaders is a factor that induces or repels participation in political rallies. Yet, the fact that front-liners in many of these rallies carry a huge banner with the legend, ‘India Out’ on it, cannot be overlooked entirely.

Contextualising ‘India Out’

As domestic developments would have it, for a long time ruling MDP chief and Parliament Speaker Mohammed ‘Anni’ Nasheed has been after his own party government, naming some ministers as corrupt. His campaign also led to the expulsion of some of those that he had named. Yet, from the Opposition side, Yameen is unable to press corruption charges against the government leadership, because he is still facing court cases in two other instances of alleged money-laundering during his presidency (2013-18).

Hence, Yameen’s Opposition comprising the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), is said to be shy of talking about graft in public lest it should hit them back harder. For them, targeting India, and through that President Solih, Speaker Nasheed and their MDP is an option, given that they all swear by the ‘India First’ foreign policy. Of them, Nasheed is also forthright in his criticism of China, with which Yameen had identified himself too much and too far, in political and economic terms.

Incidentally, the ‘India Out’ campaign has its purported origins in the Yameen presidency wanting New Delhi to take back aircraft donated for humanitarian assistance, with military personnel tasked to fly them on specific missions at the instance of the Maldivian National Defence Force (MNDF) hierarchy. That happened during the run-up to the 2018 presidential polls which Yameen lost despite being the incumbent.

The aircraft, including helicopters, were accepted as Indian gifts either during Yameen’s presidency or during the term of his immediate predecessor Mohammed Waheed Hassan Manik (2012-13), who in a way, Yameen’s strategy had placed in power. That was after the Opposition-backed ‘December 23 Movement’ of religious NGOs forced President Nasheed (2008-12) out of power.

Islamic nationalism

The Movement’s protests were centred on the first of anti-India political sentiments sought to be sowed in the minds of the Maldivian people. The protestors wanted the Indian infrastructure major, GMR Group, out. GMR had obtained a $500-million construction-cum-concession contract for Male international airport, from the government of President Nasheed, who was the first one to be elected under a multi-party democracy in thousand-plus years of unbroken rule in and from Male. Incidentally, under the contract, GMR paid a concession advance of $ 90 m upfront and also spent from the pocket, as stipulated in the mutually-agreed contract.

Though there were said to be blatant irregularities in the commissioning of GMR, the protests took a sharp ‘Islamic nationalist’ line, which visibly was anti-India in character.

This happened in 2011-12, long before the Hindutva-centric BJP came to power in 2014. Yameen’s anti-India feelings were so strong that his government would rather pay a massive $271-million damages awarded by the arbitration court in Singapore than let GMR come back and complete at least that one project for which it had been contracted.

More than the citizens of any other island-nation, Maldivians have a greater affinity for their nation’s sovereignty. As they are not tired of pointing out, Maldives is the only nation in these parts that did not become a colony of any European power. They also take equal pride in two brothers from the north of the country throwing out Portuguese occupiers from Goa, India, out.

Until Independence in 1965, Maldives, they observe, was only a British Protectorate, with Whitehall having control only over foreign policy and external security. Once the British began interfering in internal affairs, as suspected in the southern ‘Suvadive Rebellion’ (1958-63) and wanted to decide if Male airport needed a wider runway which the then government desired, the government of Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir negotiated full Independence for the nation. That it coincided with the post-War larger British design of withdrawing from this side of the Suez doesn’t matter to the locals.

On the religious front, most Maldivians still practice moderate Islam compared to some of the Arab cousins ever since the then ruler took to the religion close to a thousand years. If moderation has given way to certain fundamentalist approaches through the past decade, the rest of the nation too swears by Islam, with a result, leaders like Speaker Nasheed are still wary of propagating religious freedom in the country.

Mohammed Nasheed

Suffice is to point out that the 2008 Constitution that ushered in a multi-party scheme and also democracy, still declared that Sunni sect of Islam was the nation’s sole religion. Even the practice of other religions, especially of embassy staff of foreign governments, have to do so within the premises of their offices or homes. Yet, the nation is modern enough to relax the rule and also social restrictions like liquor-use in resort-islands, as tourism revenue is still the mainstay of the nation’s economy, including local resort owners and whatever local staff that they have.

‘Operation Cactus’

It is anybody’s guess if the Yameen camp can sustain its one-point electoral agenda for full two years, whether or not the legal and judicial system permits him to contest the 2023 presidential polls if he were to be disqualified in the face of fresh court-ordered conviction in the pending money-laundering cases. It is even more doubtful if average Maldivians, given the demography and past electoral results, see India as an adversary worthy of being disowned, as the Opposition believes.

By some reckoning, about 30 percent of the nation’s electorate are ‘swing voters’, who have also decided the outcome in the three presidential polls since Maldives ushered in multi-party democracy in 2008.

They do not have strong biases. What more, they are also aware of India’s contributions for their betterment.

Bilateral, private-sector trade apart, New Delhi has always exempted Maldives apart from Bhutan from export restrictions, especially on essential supplies like food items, if there is an anticipated shortage within the country. Through much of the past decades, independent of the party and leader in power, India has also supported Maldives’ Budget year after year.

After President Solih came to power, India has extended a high $1.4-billion aid package, comprising grants and low-interest credit, for development projects in the country. The longest, 6.7-km, $500-m Thilimale sea-bridge project, connecting Male with two suburban islands, is the single largest investment in all these years.

Apart from boosting industrialisation, the bridge, when completed, would help further decongest the capital, which has the highest density of population for any capital city in South Asia, with attendant socio-economic issues and civic problems, starting with cramped accommodation and unaffordable high cost and rentals.

When the people are well aware of it all, they also fondly remember the way India (alone) rushed military help (‘Operation Cactus’) to thwart a mercenary-linked 1988 coup against President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (1978-2008), though New Delhi was said to be the last global capital he had approached from his hiding place in Male. These sections find no substance in the Opposition’s campaign that the Solih government was facilitating an Indian military facility in the country at the proposed Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) coast guard base for Maldivian Coast Guard. They had been witness to the Indian troops withdrawing without being told, both after securing the Maldives for Maldivians in 1988 and also after rushing military assistance for post-tsunami relief, rehabilitation and restoration in 2004-05.

The education department of Maldives government has since sought police assistance to ensure that there is no harassment of Indian teachers in the islands. There have also been no reports of this kind anymore. However, the larger question of Yameen’s ‘India Out’ campaign remains. It should not be confused with fundamentalist groups harping on religion rather than nationalism in the phrase ‘religious nationalism’.

Crystal-gazing

Today, the Yameen camp does not have political or electoral allies.

Religious fundamentalist groups have not as yet identified with his Opposition combine (both PPM and PNC are two sides of the same coin). Their electoral reach is minimal as past polls have shown, yet their ‘political value’ can be high independent of end result as they can say what a ‘responsible’ political party registered with the Election Commission (EC) cannot be seen as saying.

The alternative possibility is about one or many such groups fielding a separate presidential candidate of their own, and slice away such voters who in the normal course would not vote for the ruling MDP but would have veered towards the Yameen camp. They have a new choice purely in electoral terms in the recently-launched Maldives National Party (MNP), whose founder Col Mohamed Nazim (retd), who was once Defence Minister under Yameen and who has expressed the intention to contest the presidential polls of 2023.

Yet, a clearer picture will emerge only when Yameen’s freedom to contest the presidential polls emerges. Though there are about half a dozen aspirants to contest the presidential race in his name, Yameen’s ability to ‘transfer’ his votes to the candidate of his choice would be known only when tested. It however needs to be acknowledged that contesting on his own, against a multi-party Opposition combine nearer home and an international grouping with which India too identified, Yameen still polled a very respectable 42 percent vote-share against victorious Solih’s 58 percent.

Through the past three-plus years of the Solih presidency, anti-incumbency has done some damage but the internal strife centred on Speaker Nasheed has done greater damage to the MDP’s image. Any contest between Solih and Nasheed for the party’s presidential ticket and the attendant legal issues and campaigns has the potential to weaken the MDP’s traditional vote-share even more. Under such circumstances, the three allies of the party, namely, the Jumhooree Party (JP), the religion-centric Adhaalath Party (AP) and Gayoom’s Maumoon Reforms Movement (MRM) may then be forced to look elsewhere for electoral solace. It would then be one thing for any or all of them to go the Yameen way, and another if they were not to do so.

For now, MDP cadres, supporters and sympathisers take heart in Nasheed’s declaration that they would do what it takes to ensure that the party stays on in power, for the nation’s good. The observation is capable of multiple interpretations, and a clearer picture will emerge only in the coming months, and not weeks.

Wuhan scientsts warn of new coronavirus NeoCov with high death rate, say 'one in three infected may die'

Scientists from China's Wuhan, where the Covid-19 virus was first discovered in 2019, have warned of a new type of coronavirus 'NeoCov' in South Africa, stated to have a high death and transmission rate, according to a report by the Russian news agency Sputnik.

However, according to the report, the NeoCov virus is not new. Associated with the MERS-CoV virus, it was discovered in outbreaks in Middle Eastern countries in 2012 and 2015 and is similar to the the SARS-CoV-2, which causes coronavirus in humans.

While NeoCoV was discovered in a bat population in South Africa and has only been known to spread among these animals, a new unpeered study published as a pre-print on the bioRxiv website discovered that NeoCoV and its close relative PDF-2180-CoV can infect humans.

According to researchers from Wuhan University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Biophysics, only one mutation is required for the virus to infiltrate human cells. The research findings stated that the novel coronavirus poses a risk because it binds to the ACE2 receptor differently than the coronavirus pathogen. As a result, neither antibodies nor protein molecules produced by people with respiratory diseases or who have been immunised can protect against NeoCoV.

According to Chinese researchers, NeoCoV carries the potential combination of MERS-high CoV’s mortality rate (one in every three infected person dies) and the current SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus’s high transmission rate.

Following a briefing on NeoCoV, experts from the Russian State Virology and Biotechnology Research Center issued a statement on Thursday, the report stated.

"The Vector research centre is aware of the data obtained by Chinese researchers on the NeoCoV coronavirus. At the moment, the issue is not the emergence of a new coronavirus capable of actively spreading among humans," it said, adding that the potential risks outlined needed to be studied and probed further.

The long and troubled history of TAPI Pipeline: What you need to know about ambitious gas pipeline project

The first-ever summit between India, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan on Thursday focussed on connectivity and trade. It was also decided at the meeting to resume talks for the suspended Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project.

At the joint statement, Turkmenistan president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed on the importance of the TAPI gas pipeline project that runs from the country’s Galknyshk oil field near Mary through Afghanistan and Pakistan to India.

Earlier this month, the Taliban also announced that they will deploy 30,000 troops to resume work on the TAPI gas pipeline.

What is the TAPI project that has been “under development” for three decades, why has it taken so long to complete, let’s take a look at the history of the ambitious gas pipeline project:

What is the TAPI project

The Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) Pipeline, also known as Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline, is a natural gas pipeline being developed by the Galkynysh – TAPI Pipeline Company Limited with participation of the Asian Development Bank.

On 13 December, Turkmenistan started work on the $10 billion project that is designed to reduce its dependence on gas sales to Russia and China.

The pipeline starts from near the city of Mary in the southeastern part of Turkmenistan, close to the giant Galkynysh gas field which is meant to provide gas for the 1,814-kilometre link.

According to a report by Reuters, the pipeline was initially expected to be complete by December 2019 but ran into issues over India-Pakistan tension and the Taliban situation in Afghanistan.

While TAPI will provide Afghanistan with 14 million standard cubic meters a day (mmscmd) of natural gas, India and Pakistan will receive 38 mmscmd.

The pipeline is proposed to run from the Dauletabad gas field to Afghanistan, from where TAPI will be constructed alongside the highway running from Herat to Kandahar, and then via Quetta and Multan in Pakistan. The final destination of the pipeline will be Fazilka in India, near the border with Pakistan.

Troubled timeline of TAPI

Long before the groundbreaking ceremony in December 2015, the project was first proposed in 1995 when it was called TAP or Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline. With Pakistan and India’s involvement it was renamed to TAPI.

According to South Asian Voices, the Taliban were in power in Afghanistan then and also a part of the pipeline negotiations. The construction was also delayed due to political instability in the country.

First in 1998, US-based organisation Unocal withdrew from the project when al Qaeda bombed US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

After the 2001 US invasion of Afghanistan, construction was once again halted.

As per a BBC report, a new deal was signed between the leaders of Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2002.

However, the project was essentially stalled in 2006 as its overall feasibility was questionable since one of the sections of the pipeline in Afghanistan was to run through a territory that was de facto under Taliban control.

On 24 April 2008, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan signed a framework agreement to buy natural gas from Turkmenistan. The intergovernmental agreement on the pipeline was signed on 11 December 2010 in Ashgabat.

Again in April 2012, India and Afghanistan failed to agree on a transit fee for gas passing through Afghan territory. In a similar fashion, Islamabad and New Delhi too could not agree on the transit fee for the segment of the pipeline passing through Pakistan.

On 16 May 2012, the Afghan Parliament approved the agreement on a gas pipeline and the day after, the Indian Cabinet allowed state-run gas-firm GAIL to sign the Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Türkmengaz, Turkmenistan's national oil company.

Construction of the pipeline in Turkmenistan finally began in 2015 and was completed by mid-2019.

In February 2018, work on the Afghan portion of TAPI was started under President Ashraf Ghani’s government. According to Voice of America, Taliban also pledged to support and protect the project in areas under its control.

A Gas Pipeline Framework Agreement (GPFA) was also signed by the petroleum ministries of the four countries in December 2010.

Although the work in Afghanistan started in February 2018, it was again suspended due to the fighting between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

After the Taliban established control over the country on 15 August 2021, it promised in October to resume the project soon.

Earlier this month, Turkmenistan announced that it will give a renewed push to the long-pending TAPI project in March and has been also discussing its prospects with the Taliban regime in Kabul.
