China preparing for Taiwan invasion, developing deadly kamikaze drone to fight US

China seems to be developing a new weapon to take on its adversaries in a future conflict in the Pacific Ocean region.

According to media reports, a Chinese university is developing a kamikaze drone that can be launched underwater.

This latest weapon in the Chinese armoury is likely to be used against the United States (US), Taiwan and other adversaries in the Pacific Ocean region.

The underwater launch ability makes this kamikaze drone a perfect weapon for China during a potential invasion of Taiwan in the future.

Tensions between China, Taiwan and the United States (US) in the Taiwan Strait have been high in recent times. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China has carried out military exercises around Taiwan in recent weeks in preparation for a possible invasion of the island nation.

This comes amid increasing involvement by the US, Japan, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in eastern Asia.

The most difficult aspect of an amphibious operation for the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is having US military advisors manage operations and provide technical intelligence in addition to just arming Taiwan.

In addition to other significant capital platforms like the Type 05 amphibious tank, Type 075 amphibious landing helicopter dock, and Z-10 attack helicopters, a small tactical infantry support system like a loitering munition would be a great asset in breaching the dense coastal and inland defences the defending Taiwanese will have erected.

The Republic of China (ROC, the official name for Taiwan) army has set up barriers on the beach that the PLA soldiers must dash through while expending a tremendous amount of money and personnel. They will eventually be defeated, but given the Chinese advantage in equipment and personnel, it is likely to be a terrible battle.

Thus, using kamikaze drones to attack the defenders adds to the sources of precise fire available. The attacker can advance by using this to either disorient them or demolish their positions.

Elon Musk greeted with 16-course lavish meal, hailed as 'Brother Ma' during China trip

During his trip to China, Elon Musk was showered with admiration through lavish meals, gushing praise, and memes referring to him as “Comrade Musk.” The Tesla CEO is widely admired in China, and the company’s electric vehicles have become very popular in the country.

Images of an extravagant 16-course dinner menu prepared for Musk’s arrival, featuring seafood, New Zealand lamb, and traditional Beijing-style noodles, quickly became viral, reported AFP. Some users seized the opportunity to jest about strained relations between the United States and China, highlighting Musk’s warm welcome in contrast to diplomatic tensions.

Musk’s visit garnered significant attention on Chinese social media platforms, with hashtags related to his trip accumulating billions of views on Weibo. Upon arriving in Beijing, Musk held meetings with top ministers and commended China’s vitality and potential. He then visited Shanghai, where Tesla has a large manufacturing base, before departing the city on Thursday.

A humorous meme circulating on Weibo portrayed Musk as “Comrade Musk,” standing behind a podium adorned with Chinese flags while suited officials applauded in the background, reported AFP.

However, some users pointed out a post made by a Tesla vice president after midnight, showing Musk posing with hundreds of workers in Shanghai.

This drew criticism, as it was seen as outdated to keep employees working late into the night solely for photo opportunities. Such sentiments reflect the growing discontent among Chinese tech workers regarding long hours and high-stress company cultures.

In summary, Elon Musk’s visit to China was marked by admiration, extravagant meals, and humorous memes. While his presence was warmly received by many, it also sparked discussions about China’s education system, diplomatic relations, and labor practices within the tech industry.

Elon Musk once again becomes world's richest man, here's how

Elon Musk has once again become the world’s richest person. The Tesla CEO surpassed Bernard Arnault after shares of latter’s LVMH tumbled 2.6 per cent in Paris trading.

As per Bloomberg, Elon Musk’s total net worth now stands at $192.3 billion, while Bernard Arnault’s assets stood at $186.6 billion.

Musk and luxury tycoon Arnault have been neck-and-neck this year for the top spot in the Bloomberg Billionaires Index that lists the world’s 500 richest people.

How Elon Musk once again became world’s richest person?

Wealth of Arnault, the chief executive of luxury brand Louis Vuitton’s parent company LVMH, slid this week after a 2.6 per cent drop in LVMH’s stock in Paris trading on Wednesday. This worked in favour of Musk.

The drop in LVMH’s shares pushed Arnault’s networth down and in turn helped Musk to reclaim his position of the world’s richest person.

There was a point in trading when the volatility in market wiped out $11 billion from the 74-year-old Arnault’s net worth in a single day.

When did Arnault surpassed Musk?

In December last year, Arnault surpassed Musk after his wealth climbed due to a boom in sales of luxury goods which pushed up LVMH’s stock price.

Also, a steep drop in value of Tesla’s stock worked in favour of the Frenchman.

Musk’s net worth dropped below $200 billion in 2022 as investors dumped Tesla’s shares on worries the top executive and largest shareholder of the world’s most valuable electric-vehicle maker was more preoccupied with Twitter, which he bought last year for $44 billion.

However, Musk’s networth rebounded this year with gains valued at over $55.3 billion, as Tesla shares rallied 66 per cent year-to-date. Meanwhile, Arnault worth gained $24.5 billion year-to-date, Bloomberg report said.

Besides Tesla, Musk also heads rocket company SpaceX and Neuralink.

LeT terrorist Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, who trained 26/11 attackers, dies in Pakistan jail

Hafiz Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, an UN-designated terrorist who trained the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) attackers for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, died in a Pakistan jail while serving a sentence for terror financing, his aide said on Wednesday.

Bhuttavi, who founded LeT headquarters in Muridke in Punjab, was deputy to the outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed. The JuD is the front organisation for the LeT.

“Bhuttavi, 77, was incarcerated at District Jail Sheikhupura, some 60 kms from Lahore, since October 2019 in a terror financing case. On May 29, he felt severe pain in his chest and was shifted to hospital where he was pronounced dead (due to cardiac arrest) on arrival,” said a JuD official.

His funeral was held at the LeT/JuD headquarters in Muridke in which a large number of the supporters of the banned organisation participated amid high security.

A source in the Punjab government told PTI that JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, who is lodged at the Kot Lakhpat jail since 2019 serving multiple sentences in terror financing cases, had requested the government to allow him to attend Bhuttavi’s funeral but permission was not granted.

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore had given Bhuttavi a jail term of 16 years in a terror financing case in 2020.

A close aide to Saeed, Bhuttavi faced sanctions from the US treasury department in 2011.

The UN Security Council’s ISIL (Daesh) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee added Bhuttavi to its list of designated terrorists in March 2012.

Bhuttavi was designated a terrorist by the UN Security Council for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing, or perpetrating of acts or activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf of, or in support of or otherwise supporting acts and activities of” LeT.

A summary by the UN committee described him as a founding member of LeT who served as the acting emir of the LeT and the JuD on at least two occasions when Saeed was detained.

Saeed was detained days after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and held until June 2009. “Bhuttavi handled the group’s day-to-day functions during this period, and made independent decisions on behalf of the organization,” according to the summary.

Saeed was also detained in May 2002.

Bhuttavi was also a scholar who issued fatwas authorising LeT/JuD operations.

“Bhuttavi helped prepare the operatives for the November 2008 terrorist assault in Mumbai, India, by delivering lectures on the merits of martyrdom operations,” the summary says.

Born in August 1946 in Pattoki, Kasur district of Punjab, Bhuttavi was the head of 150 JuD seminaries in Pakistan. His native town is Dipalpur, Okara district of Punjab, from where the lone captured LeT attacker Ajmal Kasab hailed.

Since 1992, he was looking after the affairs of the LeT/JuD headquarters in Muridke before the government took over its charge four years ago.

The LeT was responsible for carrying out the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans.

The US Department of the Treasury designated Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and the US, since 2012, offered a USD 10 million reward for information that brings Saeed to justice. He was listed under the UN Security Council Resolution 1267 in December 2008.

China Caught Lying: Homegrown chip dubbed as 'world’s most powerful' is actually old Intel silicon

According to a report from Tom’s Hardware, a Chinese computer hardware producer recently introduced a new chip that is suspected to be a rebranded version of an integrated circuit (IC) from Intel Corp.

This suspicion arose after a central processing unit (CPU) benchmark test conducted by Geekbench, an online cross-platform utility run by Primate Labs, revealed that Powerleader’s Powerstar P3-01105 CPUs were identical to Intel’s Core i3-10105 Comet Lake CPU.

China’s history of silicon and scandals
The findings from Geekbench were widely reported by both Chinese and foreign media outlets specializing in computer hardware. If confirmed, this would be the latest scandal to affect China’s efforts in developing domestic chips, following the notorious Hanxin case in 2006.

The Hanxin chip initially celebrated as a project that would establish Shanghai as a leading chip manufacturing centre, was later revealed to involve serious falsification and fraud by Chen Jin, the developer from Shanghai’s Jiaotong University.

Powerleader’s manipulative move
Powerleader, a company manufacturing servers and personal computers since 1997, had previously relied on Intel processors before announcing on May 7 the release of its first-generation Powerstar CPUs.

The company is owned by Shenzhen Powerleader Investment Holding, which also owns the Hong Kong-listed PowerLeader Science & Technology Group Co. Prior to its Powerstar chip development initiative, Powerleader had been using Intel processors for its flagship computer products for a considerable period of time.

Powerleader previously stated that its Powerstar CPUs were built on the x86 architecture and were well-suited for a wide range of applications, including government, education, energy, industry, finance, healthcare, gaming, and retail. In addition, the company introduced desktop personal computers and workstations that were equipped with the Powerstar chip.

These products are manufactured in multiple production facilities located in provinces such as Guangdong, Sichuan, Hunan, Hebei, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, and also in Beijing.

China’s struggle to make their processing chips or CPUs
China has been striving to develop its own ICs but has faced obstacles such as intellectual property (IP) limitations and a lack of locally created instruction set architecture. As a result, Intel’s x86 architecture continues to dominate the computer market, while Arm’s architecture leads in the mobile devices sector.

Chinese companies have sometimes resorted to purchasing chip designs from foreign companies, as was the case with Advanced Micro Devices licensing its Zen x86 processor design to Chinese chip designer Haiguang in 2016.

Fabless semiconductor company Zhaoxin, a joint venture between VIA Technologies and the Shanghai municipal government, manufactures x86-compatible desktop and laptop CPUs for the domestic market.

Additionally, Montage Technology’s Jintide CPUs are based on Intel’s proprietary x86 IP cores, with certain modifications to ensure data-processing security.

'Poison in every puff': Canada to require warning labels on cigarette packs from August

In Canada, every cigarette pack will start carrying a health warning message from August 1 in the country’s bid to crack down on smoking.

The warnings will contain include messages like “Poison in every puff,” “Tobacco smoke harms children” and “Cigarettes cause cancer,” the country’s addiction minister said.

Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennett said tobacco use continues to kill 48,000 Canadians each year. The new labelling rule is a world first, she said, although Britain has flirted with a similar regulation.

“This bold step will make health warning messages virtually unavoidable and, together with updated graphic images displayed on the package, will provide a real and startling reminder of the health consequences of smoking,” Bennett said.

A study commissioned by the Canadian government showed that some young people particularly susceptible to tobacco addiction started smoking when a cigarette was offered to them but those given the pack with the warning repulsed.

Notably, Canada was the first country to implement graphic warnings like grisly pictorials of diseased hearts and lungs on cigarette packs in 2000.

Smoking has been trending down over the past two decades.

Ottawa aims to further reduce the number of smokers in the country to five percent of the population, or about 2 million people, by 2035 — from about 13 percent currently.

According to government data, almost half of the country’s healthcare costs are linked to substance use.

China very twitchy over media coverage, reminisces ex-CEO of Prasar Bharati

As India and China ejected each other’s journalists in the recent weeks, former CEO of Prasar Bharati Shashi Shekhar Vempati termed the development unfortunate and blamed China for its intransigent attitude.

“An unfortunate development contributed largely by China’s intransigence,” said Vempati on Twitter referring to India and China virtually wiping out mutual media access and deepening a rift between the world’s two most populous nations.

Reminiscing his days as the CEO of Prasar Bharati, Vempati said that over the years he observed that provocative coverage of India by CGTN, a state-run foreign-language news channel based in Beijing, had no red lines while even the slightest mention of Taiwan by DD News would elicit advisories from the Chinese embassy.

“At multilateral platforms such as the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, the behaviour of China’s Public Media entities was often petulant against India with barely any support from other national media,” he wrote.

He said trust between the world’s two most populous nations and neighbours will require direct and first hand reporting and understanding on each other’s developments.

“Hope China realises this as it has lost immense trust in India,” he added.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, citing people familiar with the matter, New Delhi denied visa renewals this month to the last two remaining Chinese state media journalists in the country, from state-run Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television.

Indian media outlets had four remaining journalists based in China at the beginning of the year. At least two of them haven’t been granted visas to return to the country, a Chinese official said.

A third was told this month that his accreditation had been revoked but he remains in the country, the report added.

The reciprocal moves are likely to add to acrimony between the two neighbours, whose relationship has deteriorated since a deadly brawl on the contested Sino-Indian border in June 2020.

Since then, a once-warming relationship between the two members of the so-called BRICS grouping of emerging powers has grown testy, spilling over into a wide-ranging bilateral dispute.

India has shifted toward more active participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, the US-led grouping known as the Quad that also includes Australia and Japan, and which China regards as an attempt to encircle and contain it.

Ties between New Delhi and Beijing have soured in other ways. India has banned dozens of Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, WeChat and other global hits with roots in China, effectively locking them out of the fast-growing Indian market.

In recent months, China has renamed certain features in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety and calls South Tibet.

China boycotted a Group of 20 working group meeting on tourism after India, as host, decided to hold the meeting this month in the territory of Kashmir. The region has been at the center of a dispute between India and Pakistan since partition in 1947, with both countries claiming it in full but only controlling parts of it.

China’s territorial disputes with India include the abutting strategic area of Ladakh.

The journalist ejections add another dimension to the fraying ties between China and India, reducing exchanges and visibility between two nuclear-armed neighbors whose combined population accounts for more than one-third of the world’s total.

Ties between US & India ‘historic and generational’, says Eric Garcetti

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned state visit to the US from June 21 to 24, United States’s ambassador to India Eric Garcetti said that the ties between the two countries are ‘historic and generational’.

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18 on Tuesday, the US ambassador said that the friendship between the two countries has never been stronger. “You can feel that warmth between our leaders, you see that reflected at state dinner…But it isn’t just dependent on two people…It’s about 1.7 billion people who know, respect, and like each other… And see the future of both sides tied together,” he said.

Garcetti also talked about the current state of the India-US bilateral relationship. He told CNN-News18 “I think it’s historic right now and it’s generational in both senses of the word…something that’s going to last more than this moment. It’s an investment in the generation together but it’s also generating good things for our countries and for the world…Whether it’s technology…making sure technology can be a force for good and not of oppression…Whether a strategic partnership that says this is about maintaining and respecting borders and sovereignty, open seaways, or whether it’s people-to-people ties, which of course we have been building for a long time.

“Every Indian knows somebody who has studied in the US, travelled to the US…I think that this is a historic moment in our relationship…It’s natural, but this is also generational…This is something that is not just about short-term transactions, but it’s about the long-term relationship,” he said.

Talking about the PM’s state dinner in June, he said that the visit is about the idea of the Indo-Pacific now being real. “Not just to guide our relationship with India but to guide our own future to make sure we are not dependent on one place for supply chains and to make sure that our values of two democracies stand in contrast to other countries who aren’t democratic,” he said.

“This is also about the region put together, not just bilateral ties but our quadrilateral ties with Japan and Australia in the Quad…The I2U2 with Israel and UAE…We really have the ability to be a force together for doing good things not just for our people but recognition in Washington that our future is tied to India’s success and its success is tied to ours,” he told CNN-News18.

Garcetti also talked about India’s stand on the Russia-Ukraine war where it is not on the same page as the US and Europe. “We know that we can continue doing things together even where, as all good friends do, we don’t agree one hundred per cent all the time but I think the street here in India recognises how important that sovereignty issue is… How important borders and respecting them are and we’ll continue to say you don’t have to be involved in this war to feel its impact. This is affecting the global economy and India has suffered too because of what’s going on,” he said.

Regarding the concern about the amount of oil India is importing from Russia, he told CNN-News18 Our position is that India has helped us actually keep that price cap that was essential tenet…It wasn’t a ban on this oil but a price cap and so India’s participation is actually fulfilling that goal for us…Were we to see that it goes higher or something else we would have to revisit that but right now it’s in line with how the alliance has come together…We understand oil is an international good that prices affect all of us, but at the same time whether it is diamonds or technology, other places where we want to be sure that there is a price for aggression, we are going continue very aggressively after that and hopefully bring like-minded people with us.

Woman who accused Biden of assault claims to request Putin for Russian citizenship

A woman who accused Joe Biden of sexual assault during the 2020 presidential campaign arrived in Moscow on Tuesday, when she claimed she was requesting President Vladimir Putin for Russian citizenship.

Tara Reade, who briefly worked in Biden’s congressional office in 1993, claimed she wanted to stay in Russia after a Republican senator warned her she was in danger.

Reade, 59, stated in a live broadcast interview with the Sputnik media organisation that she came to Russia on vacation.

However, she said, “When I got off the plane in Moscow, for the first time in a very long time I felt safe, and I felt heard and felt respected.”

In early 2020, Reade made news when she claimed that then-Senator Biden sexually attacked her in a Capitol Hill hallway in August 1993, when she was 29.

Her claim came while Biden was building up his campaign against current President Donald Trump, who has faced sexual abuse and rape allegations himself.

Biden flatly refuted her claim.

“It is not true. I’m saying unequivocally it never, never happened,” he said.

Reade said she filed a complaint after the alleged incident, but no record of it has been found.

But a 1996 court document records her ex-husband mentioning that she had complained of sexual harassment while working in Biden’s office.

It is not clear if her allegations have ever been formally investigated.

Reade, who called herself a geopolitical analyst, said in the Sputnik interview that after making her allegations public in 2020, she was threatened with prison, her life was threatened, and she was called a Russian agent.

Sitting alongside Maria Butina, a Russian lawmaker who was arrested and imprisoned in Washington in 2018 as an alleged spy, Reade told the interviewer she has “always loved Russia.”

“I do not see Russia as an enemy nor do many of my fellow American citizens,” she said.

She had one “large” request.

“I’d like to apply for citizenship in Russia, from the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin,” she said.

“I do promise to be a good citizen,” she said, adding that she also wants to hold onto her US citizenship.

Russian lawmakers introduce draft bill to ban gender-affirming surgery

In the latest step in the Kremlin-instigated campaign against LGBTQ+ rights, Russian MPs on Tuesday introduced a draft bill that would outlaw gender-affirming surgery.

The draft submitted by 400 members of the 450-seat lower house, the State Duma, would ban any gender-affirming surgery except that intended to treat “congenital physiological anomalies.” Those exclusive cases will be regulated by dedicated medical panels that will be closely overseen by the government.

The proposed legislation would also ban legal name and gender changes in public records and official documents.

Pyotr Tolstoy, a senior lawmaker who is among the bill’s authors, said it’s intended to “protect Russia with its cultural and family values and traditions and to stop the infiltration of the Western anti-family ideology.”

The proposed bill, which is all but certain to win quick approval by the Duma and rubber-stamped by the upper house before Russian President Vladimir Putin signs it into law, reflects an increasingly intolerant Kremlin stand on gender issues. It comes along with an intensifying clampdown on free speech and human rights amid the Russian military action in Ukraine.

Putin, who has initiated constitutional changes that among other things included an amendment defining the marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman, has repeatedly mocked LGBTQ+ rights, casting them as the trappings of a decadent West.

In December, Putin signed a law that bans advertising, media and online resources, books, films and theater productions deemed to contain “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations.” The law broadly expanded a 2013 ban on such ”propaganda” aimed at minors that effectively outlawed gay pride marches.

Rights groups have harshly criticised the law as a state encouragement of homophobia, intolerance and discrimination.

Scientists reveal Earth has a new “moon” that will stay with us for at least another 1500 years

A recent study has unveiled that Earth possesses a new moon or rather a ‘quasi-moon’. A quasi-moon refers to a space rock that orbits the Earth but is gravitationally tied to the sun. This quasi-moon, named 2023 FW13, was identified by experts utilizing the Pan-STARRS telescope situated atop Hawaii’s Haleakala volcano. It is among the few known quasi-moons or satellites that we know of in our solar system.

Also read: For ISRO, the Moon is not enough. Know why

Scientists believe that this ancient cosmic companion has been in close proximity to Earth since 100 BC and will continue its orbit around our planet for at least another 1,500 years, until AD 3700. Fortunately, both 2023 FW13 and a similar quasi-moon called 469219 Kamoʻoalewa are not considered to pose any threat to human life.

What are quasi-satellites?
Quasi-moons, also referred to as ‘quasi-satellites’, often exhibit an orbital pattern that resembles our natural satellite, the moon (affectionately known as ‘Luna’). However, the prefix ‘quasi’ is utilized because these objects are gravitationally bound to the sun rather than Earth, unlike Luna, where Earth’s gravity prevails.

2023 FW13 stands apart from our moon as it orbits well beyond Earth’s ‘Hill sphere’, which defines the region around a celestial body where its own gravitational force dominates in attracting satellites. Earth’s Hill sphere has a radius of 932,000 miles (1.5 million km), whereas the distance between Earth and 2023 FW13 is significantly larger, approximately 1.6 million miles.

Also read: Moon Master: Saturn loses the crown of having the most number of moons to Jupiter

Alan Harris, a senior research scientist at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado, explained to Sky & Telescope that the scale of the loop, with a radius of about 0.18 astronomical units, is so immense that Earth plays a negligible role in the motion of 2023 FW13. He emphasized that “[2023 FW13 is] in no way associated with Earth other than by chance.”

How was the most recent quasi-moon, 2023 FW13 discovered?
On March 28, the PanSTARRS telescope initially detected 2023 FW13 before its existence was verified by multiple other telescopes. Once confirmed, 2023 FW13 was included in the catalogue of the Minor Planet Center at the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

While the precise size of 2023 FW13 remains uncertain, asteroid specialist Richard Binzel estimates its diameter to be around 30 to 50 feet (10 to 15 meters). This dimension is merely a minuscule fraction compared to the moon, which spans 2,159 miles.

What makes 2023 FW13 qualify as a moon?
It’s worth noting that a celestial body is classified as a moon-based on its orbital characteristics rather than its size.

The orbit of 2023 FW13 around the sun takes nearly the same amount of time as Earth, approximately 365.42 days (equivalent to 1.0005 Earth years). During its orbital journey around Earth, its path is highly elongated, extending halfway towards Mars and inward halfway towards Venus.

Earth has various recognized cosmic companions, with many being quasi-satellites. However, as exemplified by 2023 FW13, there are likely numerous others yet to be discovered. Quasi-satellites typically follow a stable trajectory around Earth for several decades before eventually departing from the planet’s orbit.

2023 FW13 holds a unique distinction as it has remained in its quasi-state for centuries and is projected to continue in this state for many more centuries, according to amateur astronomer Tony Dunn. Dunn has developed an online simulator that displays the orbit of 2023 FW13 in relation to the moon, the sun, and other planets within the solar system.

Earth’s other famous quasi-satellite
Another well-known quasi-satellite, named 469219 Kamoʻoalewa or 2016 HO3, was also discovered by PanSTARRS in April 2016. This quasi-satellite has a diameter of up to 330 feet and is expected to remain in its current orbit for approximately 300 years in the future, as suggested by Renu Malhotra, an expert from the University of Arizona.

Also read: Cold War 2030: China, US in space race, Beijing’s next-gen rocket to take humans to the Moon by 2030

Malhotra recently conducted a study proposing that 469219 Kamoʻoalewa could be an ancient fragment of our moon. The analysis of the light reflected from this space rock indicates that it is composed of the same materials found in lunar rocks collected during NASA’s Apollo missions.

WATCH: Clashes between police and protesters in Yunnan as Chinese govt plans to demolish centuries-old Mosque

Residents of a predominantly Muslim town in the southwest region of China clashed with the police over the weekend as they attempted to prevent the demolition of a centuries-old mosque’s domed roof. This incident is part of the Chinese Communist Party’s growing efforts to exert control over religious practices.

In the viral video, it can be seen that the crowd was met with resistance from dozens of riot gear-clad officers as they approached the entrance of the Najiaying Mosque on Saturday morning. Subsequent clips revealed that the police eventually retreated, while protesters staged a sit-in outside the gate.

According to The Washington Post, the incident seems to be linked to a court ruling from 2020 that deemed certain recent renovations to the mosque illegal and ordered their demolition.

The Najiaying Mosque, which may have a history dating back to the 13th century, has undergone several expansions over the years, including the addition of buildings, four minarets, and a domed roof. In 2019, a part of the structure was designated as a protected cultural relic, reported The Washington Post.

However, the Chinese Communist Party has recently intensified its restrictions on religious practices.

Yunnan is located in a remote and ethnically diverse region of China. It is often seen as an example of a place with diverse ethnic and religious identities, where residents are skilled at navigating various affiliations and demonstrating political flexibility when necessary.

Pakistan Economic Crisis: IMF hoping for board meeting on Pakistan before current program expires

In order to pave the way for a board meeting before a financing program expires at the end of June, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission chief for Pakistan said that the IMF remains in touch with Pakistan’s authorities for the same.

Ordinarily, a board meeting on a review of the program would require a prior staff-level agreement, which in Pakistan’s case would unlock $1.1 billion in financing for the cash-strapped South Asian nation as part of a $6.5 billion IMF package.

The staff-level agreement has been delayed since November, with more than 100 days gone since the last staff-level mission to Pakistan, the longest such delay since at least 2008.

“This engagement will focus on the restoration of foreign exchange proper market functioning, the passage of an FY24 budget consistent with program goals, and adequate financing,” IMF mission chief Nathan Porter said.

On Sunday, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said Pakistan will share its budget details with the fund. He added that he would like the IMF to clear its 9th review before the budget, which is due to be presented in early June, as all the conditions for that had already been met.

“They have asked for some more things again, we are ready to give that too, they say that give us budget details, we will give it to them,” Dar said in an interview with Geo TV.

He said it would not work for Pakistan if the IMF combined the 9th and 10th review of the bailout, adding, “We will not do it, (we) see this is (as) unfair.”

Porter said that broadly speaking, “overcoming the present economic and financial challenges would require sustained policy efforts and reforms for Pakistan to regain strong and inclusive private-led growth.”

While the IMF does not comment on domestic politics, Porter said it hopes “a peaceful way forward is found in line with the Constitution and the rule of law,” referring to Pakistan’s political instability.

Twitter to exit Europe? Elon Musk pulls Twitter out of EU agreement to fight disinformation

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter and the ever-so-consistent crusader of freedom of speech may be planning Twitter’s exit from the European market. That is, if the social media platform isn’t banned across most of the continent first.

Twitter is looking at a potential ban in parts of Europe after Musk made Twitter pull out of an upcoming agreement which is being signed by all social media platforms to take measures to stop the dissemination of fake news and other forms of disinformation.

Is Twitter really exiting Europe?
Twitter’s recent action suggests that Elon Musk may be contemplating the closure of the platform in Europe or potentially facing substantial fines. This course of action is prompted by the introduction of new legislation known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), which is set to come into effect in August.

The DSA mandates prominent social media platforms to actively monitor and identify disinformation, a task that was previously optional. The European Commissioner has affirmed that combatting disinformation will now be a legal obligation under the DSA.

According to a tweet from EU industry chief Thierry Breton, Twitter has decided to withdraw from the EU voluntary code of practice against disinformation. However, this does not exempt Twitter from its obligations, as the Digital Services Act (DSA) will still require the platform to take actions against disinformation and bot farms, provide transparent warnings about political advertising, and support fact-checking.

No requirement to remove content, but flag them
Under the DSA, Twitter is not mandated to remove content, but it must offer mechanisms for users to report illegal content. By opting out of the current agreement, Twitter exposes itself to potential penalties under the DSA, including fines of up to 6% of its annual revenue imposed by the European Commission.

European officials have cautioned Musk and Twitter that non-compliance with the rules could lead to the platform being banned in the EU. The significance of the DSA increased following a whistleblower’s revelation that Facebook and its parent company, Meta, prioritized profit over addressing misinformation and hate speech.

Elon Musk’s topsy-turvy stand on free speech
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has been posting content on the platform that pushes the boundaries of what could be flagged under the DSA and another EU policy concerning hate speech. Musk has been known for his advocacy of free speech and has frequently voiced opposition to moderation. However, Musk’s advocacy of free speech has been anything but consistent. Musk has added several addendums to his definition of free speech. Over the months since he has taken over Twitter, Musk has had to come face to face with the fact that content moderation is part and parcel of running a social media platform. If not for the users, then upon government requests, Twitter and social media platforms have to take down certain content, or restrict its reach, if it wishes to continue to operate in the country.

Unfortunately for Musk, he has been categorically on the wrong side of the aisle, no matter what he says. While proclaiming to be a free speech absolutist, Musk sided with President Erdoğan in the Turkish elections, by restricting the reach or shadow-banning the accounts of several prominent leaders of the Opposition.

Considering the anticipated crackdown under the DSA, there are speculations that Twitter may find it more convenient to cease its operations entirely in the EU.

China launches Shenzhou-16 mission with first civilian to space station

With an eye to putting astronauts on the moon before the end of the decade, China on Tuesday sent three astronauts to its Tiangong space station, including a civilian scientist, according to state media.

The world’s second-largest economy has invested billions of dollars in its military-run space programme in a push to catch up with the United States and Russia.

China built its own space station after it was excluded from the International Space Station, largely due to U.S. concerns over the Chinese space programs’ intimate ties with the People’s Liberation Army, the military branch of the ruling Communist Party.

China’s first manned space mission in 2003 made it the third country after the former Soviet Union and the U.S. to put a person into space under its own resources.

The Shenzhou-16 crew took off atop a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China at 9:31 am (0131 GMT), AFP journalists saw.

The launch was a “complete success” and the “astronauts are in good condition”, said Zou Lipeng, director of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

Dozens of employees from the space programme, many of whom live year-round on the huge site, attended the launch, snapping selfies with the rocket in the background.

Children played as they waited for the launch, some waving Chinese flags as they sat on their parents’ shoulders.

Spectators let out a loud “wow”, shouting “good luck” and waving as the rocket took off in a cloud of ochre smoke.

Leading its crew is commander Jing Haipeng on his fourth mission, as well as engineer Zhu Yangzhu and Beihang University professor Gui Haichao, the first Chinese civilian in space.

China was the third country to put humans in orbit, and Tiangong is the crown jewel of its space programme, which has also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon.

Shenzhou-16 is the first mission to Tiangong since it entered its “application and development” stage, authorities said.

The Shenzhou craft will dock at the space station’s Tianhe core module. The crew will then meet their three colleagues from the Shenzhou-15 flight, who have been at the station for six months and will return to Earth in the coming days.

Shenzhou-16 will carry out a number of experiments during the mission, including in “high-precision space time-frequency systems”, general relativity, and into the origin of life, CMSA spokesperson Lin Xiqiang told reporters on Monday.

The space station was resupplied with drinking water, clothing, food and propellant this month in preparation for Shenzhou-16’s arrival.

One expert told AFP that Tuesday’s mission represented “a regular crew rotation flight”, but even that was significant.

“Accumulating depth of experience in human spaceflight operations is important and doesn’t involve new spectacular milestones all the time,” said Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer and astrophysicist at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

‘Heavenly palace’

Plans for China’s “space dream” have been put into overdrive under President Xi Jinping, and it is planning to build a moon base.

“The overall goal is to achieve China’s first crewed landing on the Moon by 2030 and carry out lunar scientific exploration and related technological experiments,” CMSA spokesman Lin said.

The final module of Tiangong — which means “heavenly palace” — successfully docked with the core structure last year.

The station carries several pieces of cutting-edge scientific equipment, state news agency Xinhua reported, including “the world’s first space-based cold atomic clock system”.

Tiangong is expected to remain in low Earth orbit at an altitude between 400 and 450 kilometres (250 and 280 miles) for at least 10 years.

It is constantly crewed by rotating teams of three astronauts. China has been effectively excluded from the International Space Station since 2011, when the United States banned NASA from engaging with the country — pushing Beijing to develop its own orbital outpost.

China’s space agency reiterated on Monday it is actively seeking international cooperation in the project. China plans to send two crewed space missions to Tiangong every year, according to the CMSA.

The next will be Shenzhou-17, with an expected launch in October.

China snub to US as it declines meeting with defence chief Lloyd Austin

The Chinese government declined an invitation from the US for a meeting between Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart Li Shangfu that would have taken place in Singapore this week, the Pentagon announced on Monday.

“Overnight, the PRC informed the US that they have declined our early May invitation for Secretary Austin to meet with PRC Minister of National Defense Li Shangfu in Singapore this week,” Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement, refering to the People’s Republic of China.

“The PRC’s concerning unwillingness to engage in meaningful military-to-military discussions will not diminish (the Defense Department’s) commitment to seeking open lines of communication with the People’s Liberation Army,” Ryder said.

A senior US defence official described the declined invitation as “just the latest in a litany of excuses,” saying that since 2021, China has “declined or failed to respond to over a dozen requests from the Department of Defense for key leader engagements, multiple requests for standing dialogues, and nearly ten working-level engagements.”

Li was sanctioned by the US government in 2018 for buying Russian weapons, but the Pentagon says that does not prevent Austin from conducting official business with him.

Austin is due to travel to Singapore later this week to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue, a defense summit where he met Li’s predecessor Wei Fenghe last June.

Austin and Wei met again in Cambodia later in 2022, but tensions between Washington and Beijing soared this year over issues including Taiwan and an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down by a US warplane after traversing the country.

Austin and other US officials have been working to shore up alliances and partnerships in Asia as part of efforts to counter increasingly assertive moves by Beijing, but there have also been tentative signs that the two sides were working to lower the temperature.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Vienna earlier this month, and President Joe Biden recently said ties between Washington and Beijing should thaw “very shortly,” citing the spy balloon incident as a factor that had boosted tensions.

North Korea confirms June launch of military spy satellite

North Korea has said it will launch its first military spy satellite in June and described space-based reconnaissance as crucial for monitoring the United States’ “reckless” military exercises with rival South Korea.

The statement came a day after North Korea notified Japan’s coast guard that it plans to launch a satellite sometime between 31 May and 11 June, and that the event may affect waters in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and east of the Philippines’ Luzon Island.

Japan said Monday it had been informed by Pyongyang that a satellite launch could happen as early as this week, but Tokyo warned the North may in fact be planning a sanctions-defying ballistic missile test.

The North’s state Korean Central News Agency cited Ri Pyong Chol, vice-chairman of the ruling party’s central military commission, as saying the “military reconnaissance satellite No. 1” would be “launched in June”.

That satellite, along with “various reconnaissance means due to be newly tested, are indispensable to tracking, monitoring… and coping with in advance in real time the dangerous military acts of the US and its vassal forces”, the statement said.

Citing “reckless” acts by Washington and Seoul, Ri said North Korea felt “the need to expand reconnaissance and information means and improve various defensive and offensive weapons” in an effort to bolster military preparedness.

The official also accused the United States of conducting “hostile air espionage activities on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity”, according to the KCNA dispatch.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told officials to gather intelligence “on North Korea’s notification about the launch of a ballistic missile that it describes as a satellite”, his office said in a tweet.

“Even if it’s described as a satellite, a launch using ballistic missile technology would be a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions” and would threaten people’s safety, Kishida told reporters.

In 2012 and 2016, Pyongyang tested ballistic missiles that it called satellite launches. Both flew over Japan’s southern Okinawa region.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this month inspected the country’s first military spy satellite as it was prepared for launch, and gave the green light for its “future action plan”.

‘Cannot be justified’

In 2021, Kim had identified the development of such satellites as a key defence project for the North Korean military.

Because long-range rockets and space launchers share the same technology, analysts say developing the ability to put a satellite in orbit would provide Pyongyang with cover for testing banned intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Japan’s defence ministry issued an order to shoot down any ballistic missile confirmed to be on course to fall into its territory.

South Korea’s foreign ministry condemned the launch plan, but officials did not confirm to AFP if Seoul had been directly notified of it.

“North Korea’s so-called ‘satellite launch’ is a serious violation of UN Security Council resolutions banning all launches using ballistic missile technology, and is a clearly illegal act that cannot be justified under any pretext,” the ministry said.

South Korea and Japan have been working to mend long-frayed ties, including with greater cooperation on North Korea’s military threats.

Unusual stance

Meanwhile, Kishida on Monday reiterated that Tokyo is open to talks with Pyongyang.

North Korean state media on Monday published a statement from the country’s vice-minister of foreign affairs, appearing to endorse a conciliatory approach to relations with Japan – an unusual stance from Pyongyang.

If Japan avoids “being shackled by the past, and seeks a way out for improving the relations, there is no reason for the DPRK and Japan not to meet”, said the statement from Pak Sang Gil, using the initials of North Korea’s official name.

Pak said, however, that Japan needs to move on from sticking points such as the “abduction issue” for ties to improve.

Japan suspects dozens of people who are still missing were abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s to train spies in the Japanese language and culture.

Over 30 peacekeepers deployed in NATO-led mission injured in clashes in northern Kosovo

Over 30 peacekeepers deployed in a NATO-led mission in Kosovo were injured on Monday in clashes with Serb protesters while defending three town halls in northern Kosovo, while Serbia’s president put the army on the highest level of combat alert.

The NATO-led peacekeeping Kosovo Force, or KFOR, condemned Monday’s violence, which erupted after ethnic Albanian mayors took office in northern Kosovo’s Serb-majority area following elections boycotted by the Serbs.

KFOR said it had faced “unprovoked attacks” while countering a hostile crowd after demonstrators clashed with police and tried to force their way into a government building in the northern town of Zvecan.

“While countering the most active fringes of the crowd, several soldiers of the Italian and Hungarian KFOR contingent were the subject of unprovoked attacks and sustained trauma wounds with fractures and burns due to the explosion of incendiary devices,” it said in a statement.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said 52 Serbs were hurt, three seriously, while one was “wounded with two gunshots by (ethnic) Albanian special forces”.

Hungary’s defence minister said on Facebook that “more than 20 Hungarian soldiers” were among the wounded, with seven in serious but stable condition.

Italy’s foreign minister said three of its soldiers were seriously wounded, and the country’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, joined NATO in calling for “all parties to take a step back to lower tensions”.

Kosovo’s Serbs boycotted last month’s elections in northern towns, which allowed ethnic Albanians to take control of local councils despite a minuscule turnout of under 3.5 percent of voters.

Kosovan Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s government officially installed the mayors last week, defying calls to ease the tensions by the European Union and the United States, which have both championed the territory’s 2008 independence from Serbia.

Many Serbs are demanding the withdrawal of Kosovo police forces – whose presence in northern Kosovo has long sparked resistance – as well as the ethnic Albanian mayors they do not consider their true representatives.

Fractures and burns

Early Monday, groups of Serbs clashed with Kosovo police in front of the municipal building in Serb-majority Zvecan and tried to enter, after which law enforcers responded by firing tear gas, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.

NATO-led peacekeepers in the KFOR mission at first tried to separate protesters from the police, but later started to disperse the crowd using shields and batons, AFP reported.

Several protesters responded by hurling rocks, bottles and Molotov cocktails at the soldiers, but were quickly repelled a few hundred meters away from the Zvecan municipal building.

Eleven Italian soldiers were injured with “three in a serious condition”, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

“We will not tolerate further attacks against KFOR,” said Meloni. “It is essential to avoid further unilateral actions by the Kosovo authorities and for all parties to take a step back to lower tensions”.

NATO strongly condemned the “unprovoked” attacks against KFOR troops, adding that such actions were “totally unacceptable”.

“Violence must stop immediately. We call on all sides to refrain from actions that further inflame tensions, and to engage in dialogue,” NATO said in a statement.

KFOR commander Division General Angelo Michele Ristuccia slammed the “unacceptable” attacks and underlined that KFOR will “continue to fulfil its mandate impartially”.

Kosovo police said “organised” demonstrators rallied in northern Kosovo towns, home to many ethnic Serbs who reject Kosovo’s independence from Serbia.

“The protesters, using violence and throwing tear gas, tried to cross the security cordons and make a forced entry into the municipality facility” in Zvecan, Kosovo police said in a statement.

“Police were forced to use legal means, such as (pepper) spray, to stop the protesters and bring the situation under control.”

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and Belgrade and its key allies Russia and China have refused to recognise it, effectively preventing Kosovo from having a seat at the United Nations.

Serbs in Kosovo remained largely loyal to Belgrade, especially in the north, where they make up a majority and reject every move by Pristina to consolidate its control over the region.

International concern

KFOR said it had bolstered its presence in northern Kosovo following the latest developments and urged Belgrade and Pristina to engage in an EU-led dialogue to reduce tensions.

“We call on all sides to refrain from actions that could inflame tensions or cause escalation,” KFOR said in a statement.

Police had already used tear gas Friday to disperse Serbs in northern Kosovo who protested the installation of the mayors.

Belgrade responded by placing its army on high alert and ordered forces towards the Serbian border with Kosovo.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, speaking on a visit to Kenya, said that “Serbs are fighting for their rights in northern Kosovo”.

“A big explosion is looming in the heart of Europe, where NATO in 1999 carried out an aggression against Yugoslavia,” Lavrov said, referring to the 1999 NATO intervention against Belgrade that effectively ended the war between Serb forces and ethnic Albanian guerrillas.

The US ambassador and European Union envoy have summoned the ethnic Albanian mayors to a meeting in Pristina in a bid to ease tensions.

France said it “condemns this violence in the strongest possible terms and calls on all parties, in particular the Kosovo government, to take immediate steps to reduce tensions”.

Two media teams from Pristina reported that protesters had slashed their tyres and spray-painted their vehicles, while a local journalists’ association called on law enforcers to provide a safe working environment for the media.

After his first-round victory at the French Open on Monday, Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic penned the message “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence” on a television camera.

“Kosovo is our cradle, our stronghold, centre of the most important things for our country,” Djokovic told reporters.

'Israeli aggression' strikes Damascus overnight, says Syrian defence ministry

The Syrian defence ministry says an “Israeli aggression” hit Damascus overnight Sunday, but there were no injuries.

“At around 11:45 pm (2045 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial attack,” the ministry said.

According to the government, it was aimed at “certain positions in the vicinity of Damascus,” but anti-aircraft defences intervened and shot down several missiles.

An AFP correspondent in Damascus heard explosions soon before midnight local time (2100 GMT).

The strikes on Damascus were the first since late March.

On 2 May, seven people were killed in Israeli air assaults on Syria.

Since the commencement of the Syrian war in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air raids against government sites as well as Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah forces, both of which are Damascus’ allies and Israel’s arch-foes.

Israel rarely comments on the strikes on a case-by-case basis, but says it seeks to prevent Iran from establishing a foothold on its doorstep.

'Fund starved': Pakistan High Commission shuts its in-house school in Delhi

The Pakistan High Commission in Delhi has been forced to shut down its in-house school that was used exclusively by the members of the High Commission, according to a report.

While the notice issued by the High Commission to its teaching and non-teaching staff cites “low enrolment” for shutting down the school, many reports suggested that the unprecedented step was attributed to the economic and financial crisis that Pakistan has been facing. The embassy is finding it hard to meet day-to-day expenses and fulfil its basic requirements, the reports added.

“Due to very low current enrolment, it has been decided by the competent authority to close the Pakistan High Commission School. It is, therefore, notified your services will no longer be required with effect from 30 April 2023, and your contract will thereby be terminated,” read a Pakistan High Commission notice dated 31 March, 2023, as reported by The Sunday Guardian.

“As per Clause IV of your appointment letter, one month written notice is being hereby served on you,” added the notice which carried the signature of Pakistani chargé d’affaires Salman Sharif.

As a result, all the staff employed in the school, all of whom were Indian nationals, have been terminated from their job.

Citing people aware of the matter, the report said that in the new budget that will be announced in Pakistan next month, no budget allocation was made for the school in Delhi.

Sources aware of the developments said that the financial crisis in Islamabad had led to a situation where even the salaries of the staff members posted in Delhi are being delayed and reduced, added the report.

The school teaching staff were getting their salaries after a gap of more than 5-6 months.

The school catered to the needs of children of the mission’s staff, which dwindled after Islamabad downgraded its strength in 2020.

A Pakistan High Commission spokesperson said in response to media queries that upon completion of the current academic year, the activities of the Pakistan High Commission School have been suspended, because of low enrolment levels in view of the downgraded strength of the High Commission

“It may be noted that the school was never open to public and exclusively catered to the needs of children of staff of the High Commission,” he said.

The spokesperson said it may be recalled that the diplomatic strength of the High Commission was halved in June 2020 upon the request of the host country.

Four more Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders leave Imran Khan's party

Four more leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have announced parting ways with Imran Khan’s party over the incidents that took place on 9 May, according to reports.

According to Geo News, former special assistant to prime minister Tariq Mehmood Al Hasan, former member of the provincial assembly (MPA) Malik Khurram Ali Khan and former member of the national assembly (MNA) Jamshed Thomas on Sunday condemned the protests on 9 May and announced their exit from the party.

Nadia Aziz, PTI MPA from Punjab, has also announced parting ways with Imran Khan’s party, according to Dawn.

While addressing a press conference at the Islamabad Press Club, Nadia Aziz condemned the attacks on military installations and stressed that the perpetrators should be brought to justice, Dawn reported.

Protests erupted in Pakistan after the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust Case.

Several party leaders, including Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry Imran Ismail, Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Ali Zaidi, Maleeka Bokhari among others have left PTI in the past few days, Geo News reported.

Earlier this week, PTI chairman Imran Khan filed a constitutional petition in the Supreme Court against the imposition of Article 245 across the country except Sindh and the ongoing crackdown on the party workers in the wake of the 9 May riots, Geo News reported.

As per the news report, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and other ruling alliance leaders including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman have been made respondents in the petition filed by Imran Khan in the apex court.

Imran Khan requested the court to declare the imposition of Article 245 invalid and ban the authorities from arresting party workers and leaders who are allegedly involved in ransacking state installations after his arrest on 9 May, as per the Geo News report.

The petition requested the Supreme Court to stop the trial of civilians accused of targeting defence installations in military courts and called it a violation of fundamental rights. The petition also requested the Supreme Court to take action against the “forced separation” of PTI leaders.

On 23 May, former Pakistan PM Imran Khan has called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders’ exodus as “forced divorces,” Geo News reported.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Imran Khan said that a new phenomenon of “forced divorces” has emerged for PTI.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan tweeted, “We had all heard about forced marriages in Pakistan but for PTI a new phenomenon has emerged, forced divorces. Also wondering where have all the human rights organizations in the country disappeared.”

Imran Khan’s statement comes as PTI leaders have been announcing their departure from the party. While leaving the party, the leaders have majorly cited PTI’s “policy of violence” as the reason behind their decision, as per the Geo News report.

Earlier on 18 May, Imran Khan in a tweet stated, “My sympathies go to all those who under pressure have been made to leave the party. And I commend and salute all the senior members who are resisting the extreme pressure to quit the party. The nation will always remember them for standing up for Haqeeqi Azaadi.”

Biden and McCarthy finalise US debt deal, say confident it will pass

President Joe Biden and Republican leader McCarthy announced on Sunday that a final bipartisan agreement to extend the US debt ceiling and prevent a catastrophic default has been reached. The accord now goes to Congress, which must approve it before the government runs out of money.

Even while time is still running out before the “X-date” of 5 June, when the Treasury predicts there may not be enough money to cover bills and debts, the compromise reached after weeks of protracted negotiations provides a way back from the edge.

“I think it’s a really important step forward,” Biden said in a brief appearance before media at the White House, urging “both chambers (of Congress) to pass that agreement.”

“It takes the threat of a catastrophic default off the table, protects our hard-earned and historic economic recovery, and… represents a compromise that means no one got everything they want,” Biden added.

The White House said Biden and McCarthy spoke earlier in the day as they struggled to avert a financial precipice which threatened to throw millions of people out of jobs and risk a global meltdown.

McCarthy, for his part, voiced optimism that the bipartisan deal could get through Congress despite skepticism from some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

In a statement later Sunday, the speaker and other Republican congressional leaders touted the agreement as a “historic series of wins.”

McCarthy has summoned lawmakers from the House of Representatives back to Washington from a holiday recess to vote on the deal on Wednesday.

The basic framework of the deal suspends the federal debt ceiling, which is currently $31.4 trillion, for two years — enough to get past the next presidential election in 2024 and allow the government to keep borrowing money and remain solvent.

In return, the Republicans secured some limits on federal spending over the same period.

Unhappy right, and left

Congressional opposition to the bill comes from an unlikely union of hard-right Republicans who wanted deeper spending cuts and progressive Democrats who wanted no reductions at all.

McCarthy’s wafer-thin majority in the House means passing the bill will require significant Democratic backing to balance out Republican dissent.

The speaker was out pushing the deal Sunday, arguing on the Fox network that the spending limits were a significant victory and insisting that 95 percent of House Republicans were “very excited.”

By Sunday evening, the 99-page proposal was released publicly, available for scrutiny by lawmakers before the vote.

Top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell called on his own chamber – controlled by Democrats – to “swiftly pass this agreement without unnecessary delay.”

But the tone of the Republican opposition was set by Representative Dan Bishop – a member of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus – who tweeted a vomit emoji and slammed McCarthy for securing “almost zippo.”

‘Scorched Earth’

Nicholas Creel, a political analyst and business law professor at Georgia College and State University said the deal was “ultimately likely” to pass through Congress, but he warned that “Freedom Caucus Republicans have the potential to play spoiler if they decide to go scorched Earth on McCarthy.”

The agreement represents a climb down of sorts by both sides.

Biden had initially refused to negotiate over spending issues as a condition for raising the debt ceiling, accusing the Republicans of taking the economy hostage.

And the big cuts that Republicans wanted are not there, although nondefense spending will remain effectively flat next year, and only rise nominally in 2025.

“Overall, the deal is probably best viewed as a win for Biden and Democrats given that it contains fairly modest spending cuts and would prevent another debt ceiling showdown or a government shutdown during the remainder of Biden’s presidency,” Creel said.

“Nobody has enough power to get too much of what they want right now, so a compromise like this that makes everyone a little unhappy is probably the best anyone could have hoped for,” he added.

Speed of the essence

The countdown to the “X-date” means the legislation will have to clear Congress much more quickly than the normal timetable for even the most uncontroversial bills.

McCarthy is hoping to bring the narrow House majority of 222 Republicans with him, but opposition will come from 35 far-right lawmakers who told him to “hold the line” for more sweeping spending cuts.

That means a large number of Democrats will have to be persuaded to vote with a reduced number of Republicans – something that rarely happens on big bills.

Pramila Jayapal, chair of the House Progressive Caucus, said the Democratic leadership should be concerned about securing their support.

“Yes, they have to worry,” she told CNN, adding she was “not happy” with what she was hearing about the concessions made by Biden.

If a default still occurs, the government would not miss loan repayments until mid-June but in the meantime it would likely have to halt $25 billion in social security checks and federal salaries.

Turkey Election Result: Erdogan re-elected as president for third time in historic runoff

Turkey’s incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday extended his two-decade rule by winning a third term in office.

Near-complete results showed Erdogan beating secular Opposition challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu by four percentage points.

The historic runoff posed the biggest challenge to Erdogan’s 20 years of transformative but divisive rule.

The 69-year-old leader faced Turkey’s biggest economic crisis in generations and united Opposition to take a commanding lead.

NATO member Turkey’s longest-serving leader was tested like never before in what was widely seen as the country’s most consequential election in its 100-year history as a post-Ottoman republic.

Kilicdaroglu cobbled together a powerful coalition that grouped Erdogan’s disenchanted former allies with secular nationalists and religious conservatives.

Big difficulties await Turkey: Kilicdaroglu

He pushed Erdogan into his first runoff on 14 May and narrowed the margin further in the second round.

Opposition supporters viewed it as a do-or-die chance to save Turkey from being turned into an “autocracy led by Erdogan.”

Kilicdaroglu’s brief concession statement expressed “real sadness about the big difficulties awaiting the country” with Erdogan.

Kilicdaroglu re-emerged as a transformed man after the first round.

The 74-year-old former civil servant’s message of social unity and freedoms gave way to desk-thumping speeches about the need to immediately expel migrants and fight terrorism.

His right-wing turn was targeted at nationalists who emerged as the big winners of the parallel parliamentary elections.

Analysts doubted Kilicdaroglu’s gamble would work.

His informal alliance with a pro-Kurdish party that Erdogan portrays as the political wing of banned militants left him exposed to charges of working with “terrorists”.
