Labour Day: Why 1 May is observed as International Workers' Day

International Labour Day is marked on 1 May annually. Also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, the occasion celebrates the contribution of workers to society. It also commemorates the achievements of the historic labour movement.

Why is 1 May marked as International Workers’ Day?

While 1 May was observed as an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival in many regions, the day become associated with the labour movement in the late 19th century.

In 1889, trade unions and socialist groups declared that 1 May would be observed as International Workers’ Day. The day would commemorate people who had lost their lives in the 1886 Haymarket affair of Chicago.

In 1886, a peaceful rally in support of workers’ rights in Chicago led to a clash with police officials. According to reports, 7 police officers and 4 civilians died in the violence. Many protestors were arrested and given harsh sentences such as life imprisonment. The people who died in the violence were hailed by workers as the ‘Haymarket martyrs’.

The Haymarket affair gave a big boost people who were campaigning for eight-hour work shifts and better wages and working conditions.

The first Labour Day was marked in 1890 in Europe, after the International Congress of Socialist Parties declared that 1 May would be associated with labour rights. The day continues to celebrate the achievements of the workers’ movement like the eight-hour working policy. In countries like China and Cuba, May Day is celebrated as a holiday.

When was May Day first marked in India?

In India, the first International Workers’ Day celebrations were held in 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party in Madras. The country celebrates International Labour Day as Antarrashtriya Sharmik Diwas, Kamgar Diwas or Kamgar Din.

In the USA and Canada, however, Labour Day is actually marked on 1 September.

Sharif family 'paid a woman' to write book to defame him in 2018, claims Imran Khan

Islamabad: Ousted Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has alleged that the Sharif family "paid a woman" — a veiled reference to his ex-wife Reham Khan — to write a book against him during the 2018 general elections, asserting that the "mafia" is once again attempting his character assassination and might release something after Eid, a media report said on Saturday.

Khan referred to the book in an indirect way for the first time since its publication in 2018 at a public gathering in Multan in Punjab province on Friday.

The ex-premier also spoke about his first wife Jemima Goldsmith and said the UK-born TV personality had to go through court cases and face allegations of being a member of the Jewish lobby from the Sharif mafia.

They are the people who paid a woman to write a book against me in the 2018 elections. They will once again go for my character assassination after Eid. For them I have a message I will fight against them as long as I am alive, he was quoted as saying by The Express Tribune newspaper.

The book titled Reham Khan' is a 2018 controversial memoir written by Reham, a famous Pakistani British journalist, filmmaker, and author.

Reham Khan later took to Twitter to reply to Imran Khan's accusation:

Khan also accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of ordering the most number of encounters during his tenure as the Punjab chief minister and vowed he would continue speaking against the mafias.

He said Sharifs ran a whole campaign against Jemima, painting her as part of the Jewish lobby.
Khan said Jemima was also booked in a bogus case pertaining to tiles and had to face courts for a year despite the fact that the forensic test had made it clear that the tiles were not antique, the report said.

Since his ouster as the prime minister, Khan has been seeking public support against the foreign conspiracy and for conducting fresh elections in the country.

During his speech, while urging the people to come out to support his narrative against what he calls imported government, Khan said that he would try to gather two million people in Islamabad to demand fresh elections in the country at the earliest.

To a charged crowd, he also vowed to further expose the Sharif family by issuing a White Paper on their corruption cases.

He alleged that the foreign powers had imposed corrupt rulers just because it was easier for them to control them.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party took out protest rallies across the country on 10 April, a day after he lost a vote of no-confidence. Since then, Khan has addressed attended rallies in several cities, including Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.

Khan on Saturday announced a rough timeframe for his planned long march to Islamabad, issuing a call for the last week of May without mentioning the exact date, the Dawn reported.

This call is for all of Pakistan not just to the PTI," he said in a video message released by his party PTI.

"I want to give a message to all of Pakistan to start preparing from now. The start of our preparation will be chaand raat (eve of Eid) and I want to say specifically to the youth that you have to come out with flags and tell the whole world that the Pakistani nation is alive," he said.

Jazz is seen as a means for freedom of expression as well as a tool for empowering young people from marginalized societies by the global body. It also sees the musical tradition as a means to reduce tensions between individuals, groups, and communities all over the globe.

In November 2011, the UNESCO General Conference declared 30 April as International Jazz Day to highlight the role of the music in bringing people together. Herbie Hancock had stated his plan to create an international day honoring the significance of jazz after he was named the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue on 22 July 2011. Toolkit 2.0: Padma, Ilhan, Ozil, Mehdi feed to Islamist street terror, narco war

In the Harry Potter books, every time Voldemort summoned his Death Eaters to do his evil bidding, the dark mark tattooed into their skin would burn and they would rush to please their master from whichever part of the world they were. Now that Toolkit 2.0 against Hindus has been unleashed, one is reminded again that anti-India forces behave quite like Voldemort’s cult.

German footballer Mesut Ozil, Indian-American activist and model Padma Lakshmi, and British-American anchor Mehdi Hasan have all coincidentally, with no first-hand experience, inferred that Indian Muslims are facing tremendous persecution at the hands of Hindus.

And they have started tweeting in unison.

Expressing concern over the “safety and well-being of Muslim brothers and sisters”, Ozil wrote, “What is happening to the human rights in the so-called largest democracy in the world?”

Padma Lakshmi raised a tweetstorm, even suggesting that there is no Hinduphobia at all. “Fellow Hindus, don’t succumb to this fear-mongering. There is no threat to Hinduism in India or anywhere else. True spirituality doesn't include any room for sowing hatred of any kind,” was one of her tweets.

And then broadcaster Mehdi Hasan, a man with an Islamist past. He has dialled his naked bigotry down to a more sophisticated sanctimoniousness with which he finds faults with people of all faiths except Islam. He made an entire video attacking Hindus. Chased on social media, he tried to clarify that he had merely criticised ‘Hindutva’ (which literally means the state of being a Hindu) which was “bad”, and not Hindu which was “good”.

This is a trick which has long been busted: Attacking Hindus under the semantic veil of Hindutva.

If Greta Thunberg had not accidentally tweeted with a reference to a toolkit during the anti-farm laws agitation last year, we would not be sure that this sudden surge of voices decrying so-called tyranny against Indian Muslims was part of a similar toolkit. Back then, global celebs like singer Rihanna, porn star Mia Khalifa and Greta were reportedly paid to write anti-India posts.

There are tell-tale signs now as well. Martina Navratilova, who is now a regular in the India-bashing circuit and seems to have found a rewarding engagement after retirement from tennis, was among the first to chime in. Usual suspects like Rana Ayyub and Arfa Khanum Sherwani are at the core of the noise. Like a well-conducted concert, Western Left-wing media are hammering their readers and viewers with an entirely one-sided view. US far-Left Islamist Congresswoman Ilhan Omar visited Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to show the Ummah’s solidarity with Indian Muslims.

And all this seeks to legitimise the wanton violence unleashed by Muslim mobs on Hindu festivals on the streets of more than ten Indian states. The underlying message is: ‘If we are denied a veto on every matter, we have the right to riot, and you cannot take it away.’

Simultaneously, there have been massive drug hauls in communally sensitive spots like UP’s Muzaffarnagar, Punjab’s Amritsar, and now Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh. Thousands of crores worth of heroin is believed to be pumped in from Afghanistan through Pakistan, with ISI’s signature all over it.

The truth is that after the Indian people re-elected Narendra Modi with an even more massive margin in 2019, the nation’s enemies like Pakistan, China, Turkey and the allies of Islamists, the Western Left, are trying everything in their playbook to unseat the BJP government and quell the resurgent Hindu nationalist pride.

Even as a large part of Indian Muslims see through this game, the incendiary section of the community is willing to be manipulated into fear, frenzy, and ultimately, rampage.

Indian Muslim households have silently gained from the many policies and schemes of the government including housing, health insurance, LPG, water and electricity. Artisans have been handheld, weavers have got loans and newer markets.

If there has been isolated cases of lynching or bigoted violence against Muslims, an equal or more number of Hindus have been killed at the hands of Muslims over cow protection and other issues. But Left and ‘liberal’ mainstream media both in India and the West have chosen to single out only atrocities against Muslims and demonise Hindus. Very few media outlets have carried stories of Hindus getting murdered over cow or Hindu and Christian girls being systemically cheated into sex, marriage, conversion and radicalisation.

The shining example of a nation surviving and flourishing despite decades of such toolkits being activated against it is China. It sailed through three or four decades of relentless negative coverage, quietly built its influence in the West and wormed its way into western media and academia, bought off journalists and platforms, and now runs its own agenda through many prominent western media platforms.

It does not care. Nor should India. It will simply have to keep telling its story with truth and conviction and use the enemy’s lies and corruption to weaken it, overpower it, and eventually control it.

Elon Musk wants to put 'cocaine back' in Coca-Cola: Was the beverage ever spiked?

First Twitter and now Coca-Cola?

On Thursday, Elon Musk, the man of the moment, who has grabbed headlines the world over for his successful bid of $44 billion to buy Twitter, quipped about his potential takeover of beverage giant Coca-Cola.

While it’s unknown if he was serious about the purchase of the beverage company, it did hog the headlines and got people talking about the drink’s ingredients and if it, indeed, ever have any cocaine in it.

While people buzz about, we take a look at the beverage’s history and what goes into making Coca-Cola.

The ‘Coke’ in Coca-Cola

The American beverage giant was founded in 1892 and is primarily engaged in the manufacture and sale of Coca Cola, the carbonated beverage, which is a cultural institution in the US and known and drunk the world over.

The drink Coca-Cola was originated in 1886 by an Atlanta pharmacist, John S Pemberton, at his Pemberton Chemical Company.

History has it that Pemberton originally touted his drink as a tonic for most common ailments and a ‘brain tonic and intellectual beverage’.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that at the time, Pemberton’s recipe included a cocaine extract obtained from coca leaves.

The formula also contained kola nut (which contains caffeine, another stimulant). The name Coca-Cola (coca-kola) was thus inspired by these two main elements.

Interestingly, at the time of Coca-Cola’s genesis, cocaine was legal in the United States and was used as a common ingredient in medicines.

A 1988 New York Times article on The Coca-Cola Company also reported how cocaine was initially included in the drink but eliminated it by the 1900s.

The removal of the drug from the drink happened first in 1903 when the tide of public opinion had turned against the widely used narcotic. The company’s then-manager, Asa Griggs Candler, removed nearly all cocaine from the company’s beverages.

But the drink wouldn’t become completely cocaine-free until 1929, when scientists perfected the process of removing all psychoactive elements from coca-leaf extract.

It is important to note here that Coca-Cola’s modern-day recipe is a highly-prized secret and rumour has it that only two Coke executives are aware of the ingredients that go into making the fizzy brown, sugary drink.

The recipe is so guarded that there are reports that the two executives can’t even travel on the same plane for fear the secret goes down with them.

The company has always gone to great lengths to protect its recipe, so much so that when faced with having to reveal the specific ingredients after India insisted it do so back in 1977, Coca-Cola simply left the country.

Can Musk actually buy Coca Cola?

While Elon Musk, the eccentric billionaire, said that he wanted to buy Coca-Cola, it won’t be as easy as his Twitter purchase.

The market cap of Coca-Cola is around $284 billion — much more than the $44 billion he spent on the social networking giant.

Moreover, Coca-Cola is not up for sale and Warren Buffet, the sixth richest person in the world is the largest shareowner of the company. Buffett previously served on Coke’s board of directors for 17 years and has stated he will never sell a share of stock of the company.

Netizens also jumped on to his claim of buying the beverage, with some saying he was ‘too poor’ to do so.

While it is unknown if Elon Musk is actually buying the company, we are sitting back and enjoying the fun.

Rare blue diamond sold for $57.5 million at Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong

Sotheby's announced that the world's largest blue diamond, The De Beers Blue, was sold for $57.5 million. The massive 15.10-carat step-cut gem was sold at Sotheby's in Hong Kong after an eight minute bidding war among four hopeful buyers.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) categorised the jewel as "fancy vivid blue" — the top color grading, which has been awarded to no more than 1% of blue diamonds submitted to the organization.

Describing the diamond as "exceptionally rare," Sotheby's statement added that only five gems over 10 carats have ever appeared at auction. None have ever been over 15 carats, "making the appearance of this flawless gem a landmark event in itself."

The diamond is the "largest internally flawless step cut vivid blue diamond" ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), Sotheby's said in a statement.

The sale will mark the first time a blue diamond of more than 15 carats has ever gone under the hammer, the press release added.

It was cut from a rough stone discovered in discovered at the Cullinan mine in South Africa in April 2021.

The diamond is bigger than the Oppenheimer Blue, a 14.62 carat stone that set the world record price for a blue diamond at auction in May 2016 when it sold for $57.5 million.

Earlier in February, Sotheby's in London sold the Enigma -- the largest cut diamond ever to come to auction at 555.55 carats -- for £3.16 million ($4.3 million).

Twitter DMs to have end-to-end encryption like Signal? Here's how Elon Musk is going to change microblogging site

Taking over Twitter on Monday, as expected, Elon Musk has already started to plan some changes on the microblogging site. Musk said that Twitter DMs should have end to end encryption like Signal. So that no one can spy on or hack messages.

Sharing his view on Twitter itself, he wrote:

Musk also said that for the microblogging site to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral.

“For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally,” Musk tweeted.

Twitter confirmed the sale of the company to Musk for USD 44 billion on Monday.

Under the terms of the deal, shareholders will receive USD 54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter stock they own, matching Musk’s original offer and marking a 38 per cent premium over the stock price the day before Musk revealed his stake in the company, CNN reported.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal said that he was proud of the employees who continue to do the work with focus and urgency despite the noise.

“I took this job to change Twitter for the better, course-correct where we need to, and strengthen the service. Proud of our people who continue to do the work with focus and urgency despite the noise,” Agrawal tweeted.

Meanwhile, the former CEO of the microblogging site Jack Dorsey dropped a series of tweets, suggesting that he supports the move.

“In principle, I don’t believe anyone should own or run Twitter. It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving for the problem of it being a company, however, Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness,” Dorsey tweeted.

WHO warns Salmonellosis outbreak in US, Europe linked to chocolate products; all you need to know about the disease

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday said there have been more than 150 suspected cases of Salmonellosis, a bacterial intestinal disease that has affected people across Europe and the United States. This is after UK regulators had flagged a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium cases a month ago.

WHO said that there have been more than 150 suspected cases of salmonellosis - from Belgium to the US. “At least 113 countries” across Europe and globally have received Kinder products during the period of risk. In a statement, WHO said that the outbreak strain of salmonella is resistant to six types of antibiotics.

While there have been no fatalities associated with the outbreak reported as of 25 April, among the cases with information on symptoms and severity (n=21), a high hospitalisation rate (43%; n=9) was observed.

Israeli food maker Strauss Group on Wednesday expanded its voluntary recall of chocolate products after finding traces of salmonella at its plant in northern Israel, Reuters reported.  Israeli media have reported a number of children and adults have sought medical attention in recent days for suspected salmonella.

The outbreak has been epidemiologically and molecularly linked to chocolate produced in Belgium and distributed globally to over 113 countries and territories across all WHO Regions. While 150 of 151 known cases have been reported in Europe, one case has been reported in the United States of America and there is the likelihood of additional cases being reported from other countries given the broad distribution of the products during the Easter holiday which may lead to increased consumption of the implicated product or transportation of the implicated product to additional locations as a result of holiday-related travel.

So what is this disease and how is it transmitted?

Salmonellosis is a disease caused by Salmonella, a non-typhoidal bacteria. Named after the American veterinarian who helped discover the bacteria, Daniel Elmer Salmon, salmonella often causes mild illness but can be life-threatening in extreme cases.

According to WHO, approximately 2,500 serotypes have been identified, out of which a majority of the human infections are triggered by Typhimurium and Enteritidis serotypes

Transmission

It is most often transmitted to humans who eat food contaminated with the faeces of an infected animal, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

This often happens when people consume raw or undercooked food like meat and eggs, or when people handling food fail to wash their hands.

Less often, unwashed fruits and vegetables can become infected.

Whether or not a person contracts salmonellosis, the infection caused by salmonella, depends on the type of bacteria and the quantity consumed.

While an estimated 94 per cent of salmonellosis is transmitted by food, contact with chicks and pet turtles can be a source of infection, the CDC said.

If contaminated foods are distributed widely across borders, they can infect vast numbers of people.

Around 224,000 people were made sick by infected ice cream in the United States in 1994.

A decade earlier in France, at least 25,000 were infected by a food source that was never identified, according to the Pasteur Institute.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually show up around three days after infection and often include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and stomach cramps.

A healthy adult normally recovers within a few days but in some cases, an infection can be dangerous or even fatal.

Babies, young children, the elderly, pregnant women or immunocompromised people are the most at risk.

People with severe diarrhoea may need rehydration, the CDC said.

"Antibiotics are not recommended for uncomplicated cases and are only used if the infection spreads or is highly likely to spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and other organs," it added.

More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases may become fatal.

How to avoid it?

To avoid salmonella, everyone should wash their hands before cooking, keep raw foods separated from others, and regularly clean areas where food is handled.

Thoroughly cooking meat is also highly recommended.

Avoiding eating raw eggs, in foods such as cookie dough and homemade ice cream, is also recommended, according to the Mayo Clinic in the United States.

Washing hands after using the toilet or changing a baby will also help limit transmission.

Most industries have strict rules in place to avoid contamination.

Joe Biden to meet PM Modi at QUAD summit in Tokyo in May: White House

Washington: US President Joe Biden will travel to South Korea and Japan in May and attend the QUAD summit in Tokyo, during which he will also meet India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the White House has said.

Biden's trip to South Korea and Japan has been scheduled for 20 to 24 May.

"This trip will advance the Biden-Harris Administration's rock-solid commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Wednesday.

Biden will also hold bilateral meetings with South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan.

"The leaders will discuss opportunities to deepen our vital security relationships, enhance economic ties and expand our close cooperation to deliver practical results. In Tokyo, President Biden will also meet the leaders of the Quad grouping of Australia, Japan, India and the United States. We look forward to having further details to share about this trip soon," Psaki said.

What is QUAD?

Following the Indian Ocean tsunami, India, Japan, Australia, and the US created an informal alliance to collaborate on disaster relief efforts. In 2007, the then Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, formalised the alliance, as QUAD.

QUAD or 'Quadrilateral Security Dialogue' is an informal strategic four that comprises of four nations - India, United States (US), Australia and Japan. One of the main objects of QUAD is to work for a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. It is also basically seen as a strategic grouping to reduce Chinese domination.

In 2017, after facing a threat from, the QUAD broadened its objectives by creating a mechanism that determined to establish a rules-based international order.

However, in 2008, Australia left the group, and in 2020, India-US-Japan did their first joint Malabar naval exercise by including Australia again.

QUAD: Objectives and principles

- There has to be strategic and significant sea routes in the Indo-Pacific region which should be free from any influence

- Secure a rules-based global order, a trading system that be liberal, and also there should be freedom of navigation

- Work against predatory trade as well as economic policies

- Provide financial assistance to the countries with debt in the Indo-Pacific region.

Emmanuel Macron’s victory is good news for India, but France must do more to propel the relationship

No doubt, it is in India’s interest that Emmanuel Macron has been re-elected as the President of France, rather than Marine Le Pen, who wants a France for the French, and jobs for the French. The US and many other European countries do the same when they restrict working visas, so that their own people can secure jobs, and so that unemployment numbers go down. Le Pen is thus slightly xenophobic, even if 45 per cent of France voted for her, not a mean number — and India might not have been one of her priorities.

France's far right National Front party leader Marine Le Pen.Reuters

We often hear terms like ‘Indo-French strategic partnership’ or ‘Indo-French friendship’, and Narendra Modi, who is going to Paris to meet his ‘friend’ Emmanuel Macron on 2 May, will unquestionably issue a warm and positive statement, once the visit ends. But, will this give any tangible results that make a difference to India? I am not sure.

We will see the usual tokenism where France will support India’s membership of the UN Security Council, but this is an empty pledge because France knows very well that China, with veto power, will always oppose it. There are many areas where India will need more practical and forceful support — in Kashmir, for instance. France has never recognised India’s rightful sovereignty over Kashmir, whereas, on the one hand, it has accepted China’s claim over Taiwan. On the other, France itself has rightfully asserted for long its ownership of Corsica, an island that was once under Italian control, and has fought various independent movements, some of them violent.

I have written several times that one way that France would earn a deep and lasting relationship with India would be to dissociate itself from Pakistan, a non-democratic country that exports Islamic terrorism all over the world, and stop supplying Islamabad goods and weapons, that are then turned towards India, especially in Kashmir. But France, here, has always followed the US lead, which believes that Pakistan is an ally in the Far East because it embodies a “moderate Islam”.

There is another domain where France can put in more effort — the economy. France, whatever Macron and the Quai d’Orsay say, continues to invest 10-times more in China than it does in India. No doubt, it is easier to do business with China, being a dictatorship, where orders are followed under duress, and one can relocate millions of people to build a dam or a six-lane highway, in a matter of days. No doubt, it is difficult in India, where there is bureaucracy, some corruption, and obsolete visa, banking and FCRA laws that need to be reformed. But, in the long run, India being a democracy, home to a Western-loving people, whose upper and middle class speak English, isn’t investing in India a better bet? This is what I have been claiming for a long time, but without great results.

The third area where France needs to make an effort is defence: There is no need to speak about a strategic partnership, when the whole world knows that the ambition of China is not only to economically dominate the world, but also in a military and nuclear manner: China has got Hong Kong, they may eventually get Taipei, and they claim big chunks of Indian territory, like Arunachal Pradesh. India is the only nation which has the army, the manpower, and the physical proximity to effectively act as a buffer against Chinese hegemony. Macron, rather than launching the Aatmanirbhar Bharat project, which certainly has its advantages — like manufacturing air-independent propulsion submarines and high thrust aircraft engines — should furnish India with credit Rafale planes, as well as nuclear submarines, so that India is able to stop the Chinese thrust for domination in the maritime channels between the China Sea and the Indian Ocean.

India is a reasonable nuclear nation. France should, therefore, support India in becoming a member of the exclusive nuclear club, which again has the same five members as the UN Security Council — US, UK, France, Russia, and China — instead of clubbing India along with rogue nations like North Korea and Pakistan, two rogue countries, “as a nation in possession of nuclear weapons”.

Finally, apropos the Russia-Ukraine war, India is unnecessarily being dragged into it by the US and Great Britain. Ukraine is physically far away from India, with mostly white Caucasian people, and with which India has very little political and economic relationship. Whereas India has had a long friendship with Russia, received from it weapons that the US and Europe denied, and today, India depends on precious Russian oil that will fuel its energy needs.

Joe Biden, using Europe and NATO, is waging a proxy ego-war on Russia, when the real enemy is China. While the US arms manufacturers are selling to their government tens of thousands of machine guns, drones, planes, smart bombs, thereby boosting the American economy, Europe is going to suffer an economic recession, and a dramatically transformed European map, because of this unnecessary conflict. Why should India care? Macron should understand that and put pressure on the UK and the US to ease pressure on Delhi.

US president Joe Biden. AP

Sri Aurobindo said that France is the country of his heart, not the UK, where he spent 15 years of his life. It is true that there is a sentimental link between the two countries — the whole of India could even have become French, if King Louis XV had not recalled Dupleix, the then brilliant governor of French India, he who had taken Madras and whose army had come to the gates of Bombay. Even after India’s Independence of 1947, France dragged its feet to surrender Pondicherry and its four other insignificant comptoirs; Jawaharlal Nehru had to threaten to send the Indian Army for the French to finally leave in 1954.

When they meet early next month, Macron and Modi should aim for far-reaching and long-lasting agreements — economic, military, nuclear, geographical — even if these against the wishes of the US.

Why Ukraine has destroyed a decades-old statue in Kyiv

Russia has stepped up its offensive in Ukraine, attacking several eastern towns and villages. The country has suffered immeasurable losses, but more than two months into the war continues to stand up to the aggressor nation. In the latest protest, Ukrainian authorities have dismantled a huge Soviet-era monument, a symbol of friendship between the two neighbouring nations.

The eight-metre bronze statue shows two men – a Russian and Ukrainian worker – holding up a medal representing the Soviet Union’s Order of Friendship of Peoples. The statue was located underneath a towering titanium arch, “People’s Friendship Arch”, that stood in central Kyiv.

A piece of history

The rainbow-shaped installation was gifted to Ukraine by the Soviet government in 1982 as a symbol of the relationship between Russia and Ukraine. It was erected to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union and the celebration of 150 years of Kyiv.

The momument commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Soviet Union. AFP

The Friendship Arch was constructed by sculptor A Skoblikov and architect I Ivanov. The monument consists of three elements: the huge, 50 metre in diameter, rainbow-shaped arch, made of titanium, the bronze statue, and a granite stele depicting the participants of the Pereyaslav Council of 1654, where allegiance was pledged by Ukraine’s Cossacks to the tsar of Russia.

‘No friendship anymore’

“We now see what this ‘friendship’ is – destruction of Ukrainian cities... killing tens of thousands of peaceful people. I am convinced such a monument has an entirely different meaning now,” said Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko. “This place had a name, the place of friendship between Russia and Ukraine… It’s no friendship anymore.”

“Russia destroyed the normal life of millions of Ukrainians and destroyed the peace in Europe,” he told BBC.

Workers started removing the head of the Russian worker first, which fell to the ground, as Ukrainians cheered. The entire statue was then lifted by a crane and lowered to the ground, as 100 people shouted slogans like “glory to Ukraine,” according to news agency Reuters.

“Russia invaded Ukraine... Can we be friends with Russia? What do you think? This is our worst enemy, that is why the monument to Russian-Ukrainian friendship doesn’t make sense anymore,” Serhiy Myrhorodsky, one of the designers of the monument told Reuters.

From friends to foes

With tensions between the two nations rising, the arch became increasingly controversial. The metal arch over the statue was altered in 2014 when Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Activists painted a large crack across the top as a reminder of Russia’s aggression and the damage it has caused to their relationship.

The arch will remain in place but will be remained the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People and will be painted in colours of the country’s flag.

Kyiv to reclaim streets and more monuments

The Friendship Arch is not the only monument that has changed. Ukraine wants to reclaim its cities and streets and erase all association with Russia.

The Kyiv City Council told a Ukrainian newspaper it was going to change the names of streets linked to Russia and its close ally Belarus.

The capital city itself is now widely known as Kyiv, rather than Kiev because the latter was based on a historical Russian derivation, although Ukraine first implemented this change after it went independent in 1991, reports Huffington Post.

There are 279 streets and 60 memorials and plaques that will be transformed, according to TVP World, a Polish news site. Volodymyr Bondarenko, deputy mayor of Kyiv, said that city residents could submit suggestions for streets to be renamed and objects to be removed by 1 May.

“No one intends to take books of Russian classical authors down from library shelves or forbid people to attend concerts of Rachmaninoff,” he said, according to NPR. “But the matter of street names and memorials needs to be brought to a close.”

Ukraine war: Russia halts gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria

Russia has halted gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland on Wednesday for rejecting its demand to pay in roubles, taking direct aim at European economies in its toughest retaliation so far against international sanctions over the war in Ukraine, reports several media organisations.

Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom had informed the two EU and NATO member nations that gas supplies will be suspended starting Wednesday, their governments said.

The suspensions would be the first since Putin’s announcement last month that “unfriendly foreign buyers” would have to transact with Gazprom in rubles instead of dollars and euros. Only Hungary has agreed to do so, with other countries rejecting the demand as an unacceptable, one-sided breach of contracts and a violation of sanctions.

If deliveries are halted to other countries as well, it could cause economic pain in Europe, driving natural gas prices up and possibly leading to rationing — but it would also deal a blow to Russia’s own economy.

Wednesday’s cutoffs will affect deliveries of Russian gas to Poland through the Yamal-Europe pipeline, according to Polish state gas company PGNiG, and to Bulgaria via the TurkStream pipeline, that country’s Energy Ministry aaid.

The Yamal-Europe line carries gas from Russia to Poland and Germany, via Belarus. Poland has been receiving some 9 billion cubic meters annually, fulfilling some 45% of the country’s need.

PGNiG said it was considering legal action over Moscow’s payment demand, reports AP.

But Climate Minister Anna Moskwa said Poland is prepared to make do after having worked to reduce its reliance on Russian energy sources. Several years ago the country opened its first terminal for liquefied natural gas, or LNG, in Swinoujscie, on the Baltic Sea coast, and later this year a pipeline from Norway is to become operational.

“There will be no shortage of gas in Polish homes,” Moskwa tweeted.

Bulgaria said it was working with state gas companies to find alternative sources and that no restrictions on domestic consumption would be imposed for now, even though the Balkan country of 6.5 million people meets over 90% of its gas needs with Russian imports.

Is Vladimir Putin sick? The speculation around the Russian president’s health

Russia’s Vladimir Putin is the most infamous politician of today’s time. As the war in Ukraine rages on, there has been a lot of focus on the president, his wealth, and now his health.

A video reportedly from a midnight mass for Orthodox Easter, celebrated last Sunday, has emerged in which Putin looked frail, stoking rumours of his deteriorating health.

He chewed his lips and appeared shaky as he stood next to Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in the capital. He appeared nervous and fidgety during the service and chewed the inside of his mouth. However, some reports suggested that he wasn’t even there and that the video was doctored by the Kremlin.

A dry mouth can be a symptom of Parkinson's Disease, a condition that the Kremlin was forced to deny Putin was suffering from last year, reports Daily Mail.

During the service, when Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, declared “Christ has risen”, Putin did not join in with the other members of the congregation to reply “truly he is risen”, according to Reuters.

Photographs and videos of a nervy Putin are a sharp contrast to the “macho” image that the 69-year-old leader has been portraying during his 22 years in power. There’s increased speculation that the setback that Russian forces are suffering in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine is impacting Putin’s health.

It’s not the only evidence of the strongman appearing underconfident and ill.

Putin’s face appeared puffy at an awards ceremony for Russian Olympians held recently. He looked noticeably bloated as he posed for photographs at the event with figure skater Kamila Valieva, whose campaign at the Winter Games was overshadowed by a doping controversy, reports New York Post.

The “Putin is sick” theories have been doing rounds for a while now.

Russian President Vladimir Putin leaves after delivering a speech during an award ceremony for the Russian Olympic medalists at the Kremlin in Mosco. Reports suggest that he looked bloated at the event. AP

Does Putin have Parkinson’s Disease?

Another video released by the Kremlin earlier in the week showed the president tightly gripping the table with his hand as he is sitting down. Putin sits with hunched shoulders and regularly fidgets and taps his toes during a meeting with his Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to discuss the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol during the nearly 12-minute video, according to the New York Post.

“Putin’s meeting with Shoigu today shows both depressed & seemingly in bad health,” tweeted Anders Aslund, a Swedish economist who was previously an adviser to Russia.

The defence minister also is reportedly suffering from health-related complications.

Former UK politician and novelist Louise Mensch said the footage appeared to back earlier reports that “Vladimir Putin has Parkinson’s disease.” “Here you can see him gripping the table so that his shaking hand is not visible but he cannot stop his foot from tapping,” she wrote.

Another video, which has been viewed more than 1.3 million times, shows Putin meeting with his ally and Berulisian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. He is seen holding up his hand, which appears to be shaking until he presses it against his chest. He then walks quickly toward Lukashenko before greeting and embracing him.

“I am persuaded by a lot of medical advice that he is an ill man and the most persuasive diagnosis is that he has early Parkinsonia,” former government defence and NATO adviser Professor Gwythian Prins said on the show Good Morning Britain over the weekend.

The United States has refused to comment on Putin’s health. A reporter asked White House press secretary Jen Psaki at a briefing Monday about the speculations, and she said that she does not have “any assessment to offer from here or any particular comment” on it.

Or is it just age catching up?

While all of this is conjecture, it’s clear that Putin is ageing fast. Amid the hundreds of companies that pulled out of Russia in wake of the war, was US drugmaker AbbVie, the owners of wrinkle treatment Botox.

This sanction, media reports suggested, would personally affect the leader who is rumoured to have used Botox treatment. Speaking to the Australian news agency, news.com.au, one of the country’s leading aesthetic doctors, Dr Jake Sloane, had said in March that the Russian president used too much filler in his cheekbones. Botox, cheek fillers and a chin and eye lift have been used by Putin and these rumours circulate claiming that the Russian leader uses these treatments to boost his strongman image.

The Kremlin has always been secretive about its leader. And it’s hard to guess if the Russian president is ailing. But one thing is certain all’s not well with him.
